governed state in the union and to you governor wells the head of our republican state government during choso jcarl wo arc largely indebted in 1301 the republican city convention adopted a splendid platform and then nominated a city ticket composed of representative business men the result you well know every candidate and the ten candidates for the acty council were elected by large majorities so during 1902 and 1903 wa in ogden city had the best city government in our history in october 1803 the city officials were all by acclamation and eight of the ten councilmen tho result of the election was that all candidates save two councilmen were elected during 1901 and predict that same good government of this city which we so greatly enjoyed during 1902 and 1903 and it will extend into 1906 and 1907 tor we today installed four of the five long term councilmen the ceremonies will consist of an address by gov wells followed by a brief inaugural address by mayor glasmann v wells was then introduced by chairman hollingsworth as the best governor of any state in the union and as the greatly beloved citizen of all the state mr mayor and members of the city council of ogden I 1 have been asked to say a few words upon athla occasion ot your inaugural and realizing that your desires aro more attuned 10 the music of the waltz and to that spirit of jubilation which properly pro belongs to the victors of a battle than to the bum drum of making I 1 shall not long detain cither your feet or your patience speaking tonight as a republican devoted to the principles of that greatest and best of parties rejoicing in its successes sorrowing at its de taking paldo in its present and believing in its future I 1 most sincerely congratulate you that you have been elected under athla banner tho republican party of tho united states of america Is the grandest organization in the world its past Is with tho roses of honorable achievement and it future la lit by tho rainbow ot bonds of union and grown and developed into a world nation venerated at home and respected and admired by all other nations tongues and peoples nor have we yet reached the zenith of our national purpose tomorrow will be greater and more splendid than today increasing opportunities an l greater responsibilities await us aud the men who under tho wui now guard and guide our national destiny with undaunted courage nafi i high revolve stand ready to meet them eight years ago utah joined tn sisterhood of states sh o has made 0 an honorable record and rapid progress in every avenue of human endeavor her mines and mills fair farms and ranches have yielded in abundance and have poured their products into the lap ot ahe nation the evidence 0 her material growth and prosperity Is everywhere danl test her schools and colleges and i universities have increased rapidly in number and satisfactorily in efficiency abo value ot school property Is now four times greater than at the advent of statehood all this Is making tor a higher and better civilization during athla time the state authority has been in hands applause yet to be truthful for approximately tour af pf it ane legislative branch b tho government was dominated and controlled by the democracy but it may bo said of it as tho historic irishman has eald of the dead ya ovll ye waa a short alfo huh a merry L A i jy iff cut now coming down to the event which has called us together as a republican I 1 am grateful and I 1 but voice the sentiments of the young mens republican club of salt lake city in choso whoso company I 1 tind myself this evening and all the republicans who arc present on this occasion when I 1 eay we arc gears ful to ogdan that she has remained true to alio republican faith applause it I 1 mistake not this city was the birthplace of the republican party in utah and wo honor you for that in recent elections while republicans public ans of other cities of ane state have chosen to fight each other instead of the common y and have reaped a just rowan in defeat ogdon by an increased majority has elected reelected re its republican city administration I 1 honor ou for it because it after two years of your administration of affairs during which the X rays of public opinion havo shown through and through you exposing to the people your innermost transactions they have again reposed confidence in you it shows that you havo dono honor to the party that elected you in alie first place and that you havo been true to republican traditions applause it Is my experience that ogdan in an emergency may usually be relied upon thero seems to be a local loyalty about you which makes you invincible to eay nothing of the charm of your political regularity you have a statewide state wide reputation tor hanging together upon all propositions affecting your welfare and progress which other portions ol 01 utah would do well to emulate if there Is anything you would alko or might need in your business you not only ask for it but you go ahead and get it so proverbial has become your success in cheso ro aspects that it any enterprise of magnitude Is in prospect the first suggestion of your competitors Is that before straining themselves with useless effort it would be well tor them to wait and see whether ogden wants it laughter what nature and congress havo not done for you in establishing tab lishing you as the perpetual junction of rivers and railroads you have done for yourselves you havo your orchards and your factories your commerce and your workshops your mills and your water powers your immediate neighborhood raises so much that Is good tor man that as tho englishman says you cat what you can and what you cant you put in tins laughter you arc well supplied with resources and scenery and anything in or any other line tho casual visitor may not notice your world famous and enterprising mayor is always on the alert to discover for him you arc always glad to tako the stranger in laughter in the heartiest as well as the most literal sense and it some neighboring goliath gets notions about cutting off some of the special advantages with which nature has endowed you with the merciless accuracy of the youthful david you smite him squarely in the forehead and teach him that the cutoff cut off game Is one that two can play at applause and laughter you are to be congratulated upon all your victories political and otherwise they havo been fairly at times brilliantly won your prosperity you deserve you make it as you go along it is always a pleasure to meet with you for you bristle with american pluck and progress that bring success to any american community it 1 may dare io paraphrase an old saying I 1 would remark that some men are born great some achieve greatness and some have their homes in ogdan laughter it has been said that mayors and city councils can do little towards carrying out party principles that to the state legislatures and the national congress arc relegated the determination of party principle and policy this is a common error in every official act you perform you have the power to bring honor or shame to the party that elected you you may not be able to legislate upon tariff measures or on the subject of expansion or internal improvements or enlargement 0 th e navy or the thousand and ono acts which tho national lawmakers have constantly before them you can at least fashion your ordinances as w ellaa your official conduct along republican lines which Is equivalent to saying along proper lines so that tho good you do may live after you and redound to the credit of yourselves and tho advantage of those who have reposed in you their trust however I 1 am no there to deliver a lecture sir mayor and gentlemen of the city bouncil of ogdan I 1 recognize in you ahe conquering heroes of the latest battlo of the ballots and as baich I 1 am hero to assist in the adjustment of the laurel wreaths to your brows amay your administration be oven more brilliant and beneficial than your first one may you be guided by that inspiration which comes from heaven bringing wisdom and penetration and foresight in all affairs of tho municipality now again committed to your caro and may you bo prospered in your homes with the blessings of peace and health and abundance and happiness continued applause charles hollingsworth chairman ot the inaugural committee then introduced mayor glasmann with these words at tho republican convention in provo in 1900 I 1 bad the honor of seconding the nomination of governor wells tor governor of the state of utah I 1 also seconded tho nomination of mayor glasmann tor mayor of og den governor wells Is the best governor utah ever had and william glasmann has proven the best mayor that ogdan ever had applause I 1 now take pleasure in mayor clasmann of ogden i mayor william glasmann then addressed tho vast crowd as follows ladles and gentlemen and members of the young mens republican club I 1 wish to thank you one and all tor this magnificent reception here tonight for myself and in behalf of tho city officers I wish to advise you that wo feel highly honored by your presence 11 la true as our governor says that ogdan remained loyal to the republican party atthe last election while other places inthe in the detato forgot their republicanism and went democratic we are pleased to see such a large number of tho young mens republican clu u have accepted the invitation vi of cour did not send tor them to tell us jiow salt lake happened to go Democratic laughter but tor them to come and find out how democratic ogden went republican applause ever since the division movement ogden has elected democratic mayors until two years ago when a republican mayor was elected by majority and after two years service of a republican mayor and city council the people of ogden decided they liked a republican administration so well that they reelected re elected us at three times the average majority received two years ago applause our democratic friends received a severe fall at the recent election they of two irishmen who were painting a three story building they were standing on a scaffolding fastened by ropes to two hooks secured to the top of the belld ing in some manner one rope became loosened and the board dropped letting jat all to tho ground the other painter looking down cried tat did the fall hurt you no said the other man lt was the sudden stop that me laughter so with our democratic friends it was not the fall that hurt them but th e sudden stop pago of democratic votes and we aro going to hurt them worse at the next election when wo elect a republican county ticket a republican governor tor utah and teddy roosevelt tor a republican president of the united statch prolonged applause we arc going to give them the worst fall they ever had it will be from a ten story building and it wo have |
