Show insurgents GO HOME join the straight democracy of ogden city WITH HOT IMPLICIT confidence they will return to the fold but they reserve the brigt t to turn again upon their old enemy the straights the express fear that they will not get fair treatment cannon and democracy will wed next year there were two things which happened at the meeting or the democratic insurgents known as bryan silver people at the county court house last frank J first ex senator night cannon gave out to the public that he expected to be 1 the democratic party and the insurgents decided next year resolution to return to their first by love and hereafter act with tho democratic party which same party they take pride in saying they whipped into their present good and pliable condition the meeting was a real interesting one because it brought to the front all the incidents which caused the open rupture beewen bet wen the two factions of the democratic party of weber county and because it gave to a few an opportunity to state just what they thought of the democratic party which ia not of the insurgents the receptive part of the party the straights were not represented and the only members of the city democratic committee who made their presence known were james dallard and T R ocon nolly the meeting opened at instead of 8 as advertised and there were about people present when aguinaldo Agul naldo weber F J klesel and ex senator cannon entered the district court room there was a very strong outburst of applause and the mention ot the names of any and all of the silver leaders of the recent campaigns brought forth approving hand claps aguinaldo Agul naldo weber was tho first speaker and in calling the meeting to order stated that it had been called for the purpose of deciding whether silver party and its or not the dryan members should go into the democratic party he explained that as the party arose from the people tho county committee felt that it had not the power to act in the matter and therefore had asked the members to come out and decide tor themselves personally he was in favor of going into the old democratic party but he would act as the majority of the party should decide he hated those things in the democratic party which had caused last years disaffection with as vigorous and sincere a hatred as he did at that time and it the same conditions should again arise he would again take a hand in the chastisement of the machine which was blamable tor their existence but at present he believed that the bryan silver democrats could do more in the democratic party than they could do otherwise tor their chief principle silver to remain ot the party meant defeat and he would rather see the republican party defeated than see the democratic party go down the republican party was the party of corruption of trusts of imperialism and of gold it Is an english party with english ideas he praised the democratic party of the nation congratulated the straight democracy of weber county that it had come to its senses and back to the liberal democracy of old and then introduced lion L W itt as chairman of the evening clr realizing that time was bhart stated that be came unprepared to make a speech and paved the way lor T D johnson to introduce a set of resolutions which mr johnson did mr johnson read the call and then reread re read it and then spoke on the magnanimity nani mity of the straights and that was the result ot the chastisement given them by the insurgents last fall he felt pleased that they had seen the true light and he was anxious to go home and again be warmed in the bosom of hla party he also roasted the democracy which caused him and the other insurgents to leave them and to go out into the cold in support of a principle he was pleased that they bad so grown that aney could be liberal once more and asked all persons who believed in the principles enunciated in the chicago platform to come in and join them in the coming campaign he contrasted the liberality of tho call with the narrowness of the call of 1898 and then stated that the time was coming when the lion and the lamb will he down together and he was willing it should come now H said that the call was eo broad that every silver republican and every populist and every bryan democrat could como into the tent and there could pi down with the elect and cast his vote for whom he pleased and without the sacrifice of bis party name we asked for this a year ago and they forced us out of the party now it Is they who are suggesting fusion or operation cooperation co they asked us whom they called traitors 0 o come in and help them make the fight tor victory I 1 am willing to do it get in and defeat the republican party which deserves nothing but defeat but go in as individuals give them the hand of fellowship and in the knowledge that you ara right do all these things A G horn attracted the attention of the chairman as eoon as johnson seated himself and he opposed most earnestly abo adoption of the resolutions slating that he did not purpose to undergo the experiences with ithe democratic party which he did a year ago referring to tho alleged story of the second he wanted to know who was responsible tor the call under which the insurgents were to go back to the fold he wanted to know it it was a trap before he went into it he did not purpose to present himself for sacrifice and be tied hand and foot and then find that he was not in lt he wanted to feel that he was not deserting the old flag without there was something to be gained by it james Il allard a member of t democratic central committee then stated for the edification of all present that the committee had actually adopted a call as stated and a call as liberal as the one read by mr johnson C chief of the wa shakieh and bytheway by the way there were a number of washakie Wash akle present arose to his feet and said that mr ballard and the secretary of the city central committee mr T R OO were both bound to him by the bonds i of the great order of Wa and he was satisfied they bad done much toward securing such a liberal call for the city democracy he then turned back the pages of history and recounted some of the incidents which had brought about the departure of the insurgents from the bouse of their fathers he told of the persecutions of the Was haklos and of the call of the county democratic committee of 1898 and which was the cause of dissatisfaction which defeated the democratic party in ibis bounty that year the insurgents had asked tor operation cooperation co last year and they were treated with scorn this year we are the operation cooperation co we asked for and on a broader plane than that which we asked it they had given to us last year what they offer this year the majority of the silver republicans would have been in the democratic party today it Is my impression now that ithe silver republicans of toda yare but an infinitesimal percentage of the party and the great majority have gone back to the republican party for myself I 1 want to suggest that operation cooperation co Is necessary and that the silver republican and populist and democratic parties hold primaries and conventions on the same day and that we nave a operative cooperative co democratic ticket if they will agree to this I 1 solemnly swear that I 1 will hereafter be found in the democratic camp H R macmullan spoke for fifteen minutes on a more conservative plane his suggestion was that the democrats could well return to the democratic party because they had taught the straight democrats choso whose actions had caused all the trouble the lesson which it was their duty to teach that the power of the party was derived from the members thereof we defeated the democratic and republican parties on the issues of last year and the same issues are before us this year now come the people whom we left and they want to come back to us and their crown is not that of imperialism they have come down from their high horse and they are now walking on the ground beside us they asked our forgiveness for their wrong doing and they havo by the liberality of this call acknowledged that they were wrong the silver question is the question of today and it was last year and the year before and we must lineup on that issue wo want co opera tion we want silver and we want wm jennings bryan to lead the hosts in 1900 we should not hesitate I 1 see no reason to do BO but fortify ourselves by joining with those who seen the error of their way and have become as one of diw I 1 am not afraid we went into their camp and came out victorious and we can do it again jax senator cannon was then asked his opinion of the movement proposed and he expressed himself pleased at the liberality of the call he was glad that it had finally come A year ago the weber county democratic committee had decided that it knew more about politics than did the national committee and they had refused to oo operate with other parties now they have come forward and they have been even more liberal than was asked of them he had hoped for this and he was glad it had come even at this late day albeit it was far from him to say that the nearness of the campaign and the doubt of their securing the offices otherwise may have had some influence on their action they say sometimes that it la not good to have partisan politics in city affairs it you have a party and a principle for which to fight it it la worth fighting for in tho nation or the state it la a good thing to havo it solid in the cities the wards and the precincts it is a better thing or the party and the principle to have the influence of one of your own belief in a city or county office and handling the patronage of that office than one of your enemies let the fight begin in the primaries and carry it up to the highest point to the bryan democrats insurgents he said go into tho democratic party that Is where you belong you have carried their primaries once you can do it again your influence will be wholesome but I 1 believe that you should ask them as mr has said do you believe in cooper co oper aaion and it they do go in with them and it not let them go their way and they may operate cooperate co next year to the silver republicans keep up your party organization until next year I 1 expect to be in the democratic party myself next year but it will not be the democratic party of croker and delmont it will be the democratic party of jefferson of lincoln of bryan of dutler and teller they tell you now that bryan bag changed the issue of the coming campaign and that you know that tho greatest principle Is protection bryan has not changed the issue bryan has claimed that the mother of all trusts is the money trust in 1896 he wanted to kill the money trust before it unloaded a great brood of trusts upon the people now he is after the brood tor the brood was unloaded and the money trust still thrives he wants to kill the whole browd of them now keep up your organization do not go into the democratic party this year I 1 agree with mr johnson that the lion and the lamb will lie down together some time but I 1 do not want the lamb to lie down inside the lion the chairman of tho democratic national committee and all the silver leaders counsel you to wait till next year and it the man who trains the lion is afraid of him I 1 do not want to take any chances it Is unnecessary to say to the pop ulises keep cup your organization I 1 am proud of them that they were the first to see the groat fight which was coming and they have shown a tenacity of pur pose which means that they will never relinquish their party organization un til they have eeck their principles taken up by a party strong enough to bring them to success there was a continued on eighth page insurgents GO HOME continued from sixth page warm applause at tho close of mr cannons remarks and then mr ly arose and read the following which ho said would be embodied in the call when it was published we also invite the operation cooperation co of the silver republican and populist parties and it desired to hold convention on the same day of the convention hereby called to the end that thero may bo a common ticket named by such conventions the resolutions introduced by T D johnson were in substance as follows resolved that it is the sense of this meeting that abo city democratic com matteo having heretofore issued a call recognizing the principle of fusion tor which the dryan silver party blood in 1898 it Is the plain duty of every democrat who believes in the doctrine of fusion and operation cooperation co of all the ill metallic forces of weber county to attend the primaries so called and par therein resolved that it the silver republican parties shall prefer to join with the democrats in a co opera tion by party organizations rather than by individual action and we take it such Is the spirit of said call fusion including operation cooperation co as the greater includes the lesser they should call conventions to be held on the same day as that under the democratic call to the end that there may be named a common ticket for the election to be held in november resolved that the dinst la a date too early and that it Is neither necessary or proper to hold the convention at the time mentioned in said call and the honorable committee to requested to make such change as will overcome this criticism and objection and then the meeting was over and it Is more than probable that there will be a three parly ticket in the field this all |
