Show CEN TAYLOR FOR republicans of kentucky enthusiastic and harmonious platform opposes civil service plank in national republican platform record of the party on trusts praised me Kin levs administration sound currency the source of all our prosperity lexington ky july 13 when the republican state convention assembled shortly after 9 today standing the first thing room waa in demand was the report of tho resolutions committee i the platform is as follows we pledge the republican party of kentucky to the enactment of all such laws as may be necessary to prevent trusts pools combinations or other organizations from combining to depre elate below the real value or to enhance the cost of any article or to reduce the proper emoluments of laber we congratulate the republican party that existing federal legislation for the suppression of harmful trusts pools and combinations is the work of a republican congress performed during the administration of a republican president and we congratulate the country that in the suppression of injurious combinations republican legislation has had in the past as it will have in th e future due regard for the interests of legitimate business the purposes of such legislation being tho remedy for wrong and not embarrassment to industry enterprise or thrift we endorse without desei ve the administration of president mckenley and congratulate the american people upon the condition of prosperity and happiness resulting from the wisdom and patriotism which he has brought to the discharge of his public duties we declare our confidence in the policies adopted and the measures taken by the president to restore order und to establish progressive governments in cuba porto ako and the philippines and we pledge him continuous support until these objects are fully attained wo affirm our adherence to principles and policies proclaimed by ithe last national republican convention except as to the civil service we regard it as settled beyond dispute that the maintenance of a sound currency through republican administration and legislation Is the foundation upon which rests the most remarkable period of industrial progress commercial activity and general prosperity within the experience of the people of the united states we commend the present amendment of the civil service rules by the president and declare our belief that further modifications of existing civil service legislation may be made with advantages to the public service A large part of the platform Is de toted to the denunciation of the goe 1 election law the mcchord railway law and other democratic measures passed over the governors veto the administration of governor bradley is warmly commended before the call of districts for the nomination of governor captain stone took the platform and created a most exciting scene by withdrawing his name and presenting the name of lion W S taylor then judge clifton J pratt the other candidate tor govern tor followed stone in another stirring speech of withdrawal and seconded the nomination of taylor which was made unanimous amid the wildest scenes when the committee escorted general taylor to the hall there was another great demonstration gen taylor addressed the convention accepting the nomination john marshall of louisville was nominated tor lieutenant governor without the formality of a ballot I 1 for secretary of state the names of H young of bath county J B bennett of greenup county harlan T batty of lee county and caleb powers of knox county were presented A ballot was taken but powers had such a decided advantage that bis nomination was made unanimous before the vote was counted there were wild decenes when judge W H hall presented the name of judge clifton J pratt tor attorney general judge pratt had been a candidate for lieutenant governor W D durham made a notable speech tor harmony in seconding the nomination of pratt the spell was by W J yerkes in presenting the name of R ramsey of london ky in an eloquent speech disclaiming the need of any conciliatory nominations R W slack one of the leading can dilates tor attorney general turned the tide again to pratt by withdrawing did also Z T proctor the vote as announced was pratt 1119 ramsey necessary to nomination pratt was declared the nominee judge pratt made a speech of acceptance judge ramsay made a speech accepting the nomination for adjitor of state the names of john S sweeney of bourbon T J hardin of oceo and W E catchings of lourel presented sweeney received 1271 votes and was declared the nominee |
