Concerning him a writer of the London Chronicle says: I pat half a sheet of paper, with pen and ink. on the floor before him. He. threw oil his shoes as he eat; took the ink stand in the toes of his left foot (having been born without arms), and held the pen in those of the right. He then wrote three fine lines better than most can with the fingers. He feeas himself, and can bring both his mtxit or his broth to his mouth by holding the fork or spoon in his toes. He showed me how lie shaves. He can dress and undress himself. He is a farmer by occupation; milks his cows with his toes, cuts his own hay and binds up the bundles and car-ries it about the field for his cattle. In saddling and bridling his horse he does it with his teeth. He is so strong in hi9 teeth that he can lift ten pecks of beans with them, and he can throw a hammer as far with his feet as moat people can with their hands. A FICHTING KID. A Story About a Itrnther of the Famous Id. Htokra. "I don't bvlictv,1 remarked the 49-- er to a Chicago Tost tvportor, it is generally known that Kd. Stokes, who killed Jim Kisk, had a brother Jots who was once the worst feared and best liked man in California. In 18.r2 I was in Sacramento, and it wan thero I made Joe's acquaintance. He was then a book-keepe- r. One day I was in a gambling house and noticed among the players an elegantly dressed, handsome young fellow about -- 0 years of age. The man who sat next him was a ruffianly looking fellow with n gun conspicuously strapod to his side. Somehow a dispute arose between these two, and with the rest of the peo-ple in the room I got as close to them as I could in order to see the outcome. The bad man was trying to get the youngster into a light, which the youngster politely declined. Then thf bad man began to bluster. ' You want to look out for mo.' he said; Tin the Wild Wolf of the Arkitn-saw- , I'm a half-bree- d Cherokee, I am, and the bloodiest man in the tribe. I've killed 37 able-bodie- d men, I have, and I'd chaw you up in two bites, you young coeksparror. I've been in hero three weeks and ain't killed no one vet. and I'm jiwt thirbtintf for gore. I'll kill you if you open your mouth iijritin.' 'Hero the Ijystiiiiders interiiosed ttnd told the Wild Wolf to let the boy alone. " Thank you, pentlonien,' nuid tho boy; 'but I don't think the Wolf can hurt anybody.' "(Jet out of tho way!" yelled the Wild Wolf; 'I'm to lioot!' A ffonoral rush was made for the doors, as was always the ea-t- when a liht was imminent. Hut the boy utood cool and Kiniliny until the Wolf laid his hand on his gun, when, in the twink-ling of an eye, loo boy had tho inuzlo of u small revolver within u foot of tho pit of the Wolfs stomach. " My dear sir.' he naiil, in tho po. litest jiossiole way, 'throw up your hands or I'll kill you dead.' "The Wolf saw that his bluff was called and mechanically obeyed. "Now,' said tho boy, 'unbuckle your belt and let that fall.' The Wolf did it. Then the boy made him go into a corner of the room and stand thero, and, lighting a eigar, he said: " 'My dear sir, hold your hands behind your back. I'm going' to stick the fiery end of this cigar in your nose. and you must let it stay there uutil it goes out, and if you flinch, sniffle or attempt to take it out I'll shoot.' " 'He then put his threat into exocu. tion, and the Wolf burned like a mar-tyr for a full minuto. The boy now gave the Wolfs revolver to one of tho men standing near and said: " 'When I'm gone give him his gun. My name is Joo Stokes, and I can lick any man in California who doesn't Ilka me. I'm looking for such soft snaps us the Wild Wolf of tho Arkans'iw.' " J. P. IIcsskk, ITuttsmoutU, Meb, The Work of SwordflalO The society of California Pioneers are the owners of a wonderful curi-osity. It is a section of timber taken from the side of tho ship I'owhatan. It includes a portion of the "skin," which is four inches thick, and a piece of abutting knee, which is nine inches thick; transversely through the whole of this a sworuflsh has dashed his sword, and the portion broken off is still embedded in tho timber. The sword pierced through thirteen inches of this solid oak, and the fish was going in the same direction as the ves-sel at that, the ship being under a good head of steam at the time. An idea of the strength which must have been exerted can be obtained from the fact that a rifle could not have done more than pierce that thick-- ness of solid oak. People on the ves-sel stated that they felt the shock caused by the blow, and thought that they had struck something floating be-neath the surface. The sword is over six inches wide at the broadest point, where it is broken off. The Throat' Itidvppndeiit nrtain. "Did you ever know" said a well known specialist, as he deftly insorted a looking-glas- s into the roof of the sufferer's mouth, "that the throat has a brain of its own? Xo? I sunnosn taw of tho laity do know it. but it's a fiiot. There is a smull tranglia which exer-cises direct control over tho muni'les of the throat and acts its its brain. Of course, it is subservient to the genuine brain, but at the sums time does a good deal of independent thinking for itself, it is very timid and suspicious at any strango objects that come near tha throat. For this reason it is very difficult for a physician to operate on the throat. Before any t.iing can be done in this direction it is necessary for the operator to gain the confidence of the little brain that dominates it. It frequently take weeks before this confidence can be secured, and until it is secured it is impossible to onerate. When the little brain is finally matlo to understand that no harm is intended it, but that the physician is actuated by friendly motives, it will submit to almost any treatment, however painful. "But woe be to the man who attempts rough treatment to the throat before gaining the little brain's confidence, and in spite of its protests. His operatione will be resonted with violont paroxysms first of tho throat, then of tho diaphragm and, if the operator still persists, tho patient will be thrown into convulsions. Still more curious is the fact that this little brain has a memory, and if once frightened in this way, it is almost impossible to ever gain its confidence, no matter how gentle the operator may be. "I don't know whether its distrust would extend to other operators than the ono who frightened it or not I think I will try the experiment some time of seeing whether it can remember faces." Philadelphia Press. - Fearful Mortality. The number of Americans who die annually in Home is greater than most people have any idea of. The Romun fever is a malignant type of malarial fever. There is a large cemetery in Kome which is filled with the remains of American victims of the Roman fever. Another cemetery iu l'aris also contains a goodly number of the same class. They contracted the fever in Kome. It is not surprising that Rome should be unhealthy. The present city is built on top of seven cities. In the ancient days, every time Rome was re-built they filled in and started a new city over it. That has been repeated seven times. When one thinks of the amount of filth and garbage that lies under the present city, he can only wonder that any one is able to live there." A church with a poor fountain never gain! anything by having a very tall steeple.
