Show OPENING DAY AT W.EBER ACADEMY Weber Academy, which opened Its floors last Tuesday, shows an Increase In attendance of three hundred per cent during the past decade, and the present year promises to excel all others In the history of the school. The growth of the Institution has been gradual, but Incessant, and the steady increase In the number of students Is a tribute to the work and elDclency of the founders and faculties. In addition to the faculty ami about two hundred students, D. O. McKay, president of the board of education, L. W. Shurlllff, C. F. Middleton, John Watson nDd Joshua Homer were present pres-ent at the opening of the school-Principal school-Principal W. W. Henderson was the first speaker on the program and everyone ev-eryone present was Impressed with his talk. Under his supervision It would seem that the academy cannot help but forge forward Tho ring of sincerity, determination and power which was In his volte gained for him tho loyalty of all present and bespoke for him the support of all those living liv-ing In the surrounding districts. Mr. Henderson was followed by L. W. Shurtllff. former president of the board of education, and who served In thts capacity since the foundation of tho first school building was laid. Mr. Shurtliff told of the advantages of today as oompared with those of years gone by, and stated that there was no other Institution In Utah of which he was more proud than Weber academy. President C F. MldiMcton, who has pc-rved on the school board since Its organization, spoke of the school In terms of loyalty that were unmistakable unmistak-able and which enthused every student stu-dent present He ws followed by President John Watson, who said that thus far every child of his who was old enough had tome under the influence of Weber academy, and that there were more yet to come. President Watson has served as a member uf the city school board and th- school board of the j f- tate Industrial institution, as well as on tho hoard of tho State School for the Hlind. He has been an active member of the church board of education of this district for ten years. Apostle D. O. McKay, th? present president of the board, in his remarks, re-marks, mentioned first the good fortune for-tune of the scli ol in having secured the services of W. W. Henderson, so well known throughout the state as an authority In bis line. He also spoke most leellncly and in the highest high-est terms of .?. G. I.indh, who has returned re-turned again to the school after having hav-ing spent three years In Germany at 1 the University if Heldelburg. from whence he brines his doctor's degree. The speaker cited him ns an example exam-ple of loyalty, for Mr. Undh has re-fuser re-fuser a chair in one of the leading colleges of the slate to accept the po,liion In the local school. The pleasure of the opening was greatly enhanced by the solos rendered ren-dered by Miss Kinie Shorten. |
