Through a report made by Superintendent Super-intendent Mills It was shown that iherc are ninety-one boys taking the military drills at the high school Instead In-stead of. thirty-rex en ns reported by one of the board members at a previous pre-vious meeting That Includes all who were drilling. Only those students stu-dents who aro members of the football foot-ball squad and those who have doctor's doc-tor's certlficaten arc excused from the drills. After a brief discussion the board last night authorized the expenditure of $131 for equipment to lo used by the students In their military drills. These drills, which were not looked upon with favor at first V.v some members mem-bers of the board, have been found to be ono of the best courses of training train-ing at the high school. An expenditure of $10 for an emergency emer-gency case, petitioned for by the girls of the high school, was authorized by the loard. Thanksgiving Holidays. In accordance with tho board's order or-der there will be no sessions in thj public schools of Ogden on Thanksgiving Thanks-giving day. November 24 nor tho day following, the sessions not to bo taken up until Monday, tho 23lh. The matter mat-ter of a week or two weeks' vacation at holiday time was also discussed but action was deferred until tho next regular meeting. Superintendent Mills reported that concrete work on the foundation of the new Twenty-second street school house would start todav. It having been Impossible to get water piped Into the grounds until now. The forms for the concrete foundation have been la place for several days. There was no official health report submitted but Miss Williams, the secretary, se-cretary, reported to the board that three were still a few cases of scarlet fever in the city. One member was of tho opinion that scarlet fever was on the Increase and believed that It was due to the burning of leaves. No official action was token to terminate the practice. The report of the treasurer showed that there was a balance of $?,22S,00 on hand. A large number of bills were ordered paid, ( Tho business last evening was transacted by three members of the board. BOARD GOES HFIERJOCTORS Following tho report that perfect- ly healthy children had been given doctor's certificates in order that they might escape the compulsory school law, the board of education at Its meeting last evening threatened to publish the names of Ogden physicians physi-cians Issuing such certificates unless the practice Is discontinued at once. I At the previous meeting of the I board Superintendent Mills was em-' em-' powered by the board to make an 1 Investigation and compel all children of the proper age to attend public fchools regularly In compliance with the ttate compulsory school law. Although Al-though he has but one week in which to make such an Investigation he reported to tho board last evening that he had found among the co,ses where children possessed doctor's certificates excusing them from attending at-tending school some few where there was absolutely no physical ailment I warranting the issuance of 6uch a I certificate After All the Children. j Having received tho endorsement of his action by the board, Superintendent Superin-tendent Mills is determined to have ! all children within the legal age limit attend the puollc schools. Through action taken by tho board it Is planned to extend the practice of wearing cadet uniforms by the high school boys Into tho third and . fourth year classes. While the members mem-bers of the two upper classes will not Ik? compelled t- take tho drills, as Is now the case with the first and second year boys, they will be peril per-il Itted to do so if they bo desire. This action was brought about through complaints by parents, who found It uneconomical for tho students stu-dents to discard their cadet uniforms after finishing the second year In I high school.
