Show CANNERIES WILL OPEN THURSDAY The tomato cauneries throughout Weber county will commence operations opera-tions for tho season Thursday and the prospects for a bumper yield of tho fruit this year , are bright. A. Ij. Brewer, who owns eight of the twenty-five canneries in the stale, says that 350.001) cases of tomatoes will be tanned In Utah this year. The fact that the crop of tomatoes in Weber county is ripening about tw6 weeks ahead of tbe usual lime Is looked upon by the growers and packers pack-ers as an Indication of a phenomenal yield per acre Usually the crop is affected by the early fall frosts In ripening The danger of frost this year Is eliminated, as the fruit will all be gathered before tho nights become, cold enough to do any damage From the start of the canning there will bo three weeks of ripening weather, a condition which has not prevailed in this part of the country for years. Mr. Brewer, In speaking of tho prospects pros-pects of a big tomato yield this enr. said that the crops are looking especially espe-cially fine below the Weber river, but Hint in the higher grounds the scarcity of water has had some small effect on the growth of the vines. "Weber county," said Mr. Brewer, "produces more tomatoes to tho acre than any olher county in the United States. 1 believe It safe to say we produce twice as many tomatoes per acre as any other county in country. I get reports from all over the conn-try conn-try and in most of the tomato districts dis-tricts the growers are satisfied with a yield of eight or ten tons per acre. Hero there are fields producing more than thirty tous to the aero and no grower Is satisfied unless his crop runs over ten tons to the acre "The canneries are also paying higher prices for the produce than in my other part of the country. This jear we had to pay $10 per ton in order or-der to get the farmers to grow tomatoes. toma-toes. This was two dollars per ton iaoru than formerly, and yet we did not contract for as many acres as wc usually do. Despite the light acreage, acre-age, tho yield will easily equal that of former years. I have eight hundred hun-dred acres of tomatoes to can ani ?ll of tho fields aro iu excellent condition." |
