John 0 Carlisle, former secretary of the treasury, trea-sury, who has been ill for the past two days, died at his apartments in New York at lOfT.o tonight, of heart ffakre, accompanied by oedema of the lungs. An Intestinal complaint of long standing, which wore down his vitality, vi-tality, lay behind the technical fact of heart failure. lie was attacked last spring by the same trouble, complicated com-plicated by an ailment of the kidneys and for a time hovered near death. John GrlfTln Carlisle was born In Kenyon county, Kentucky, on Sep-t Sep-t ember .r, 151.15. From 1S77 to 1500 he wa.s a member of the national house of representatives, and from 1503 to 1 R90 was its speaker. He resigned re-signed to Mil the unexpired term of James B. Beck in Ihe Uniird States senate, from which he again resigned fti 1503 to become secretary-of tho treasury under President Cleeland. With Ihe retirement' from power of the Democratic party In 1S07 he withdrew with-drew from politics and took up the practice of law In New York City. The body will be sent to Washing-ten Washing-ten tomorrow and the funeral will probablv be held at the residence which Mr. Carlisle still retained there. Burial will be In the family plot at Covington,' Ky. ' |
