To quench a howling mob of twenty Industrial Workers of the World, penned In a court of justice, a steam fire engine was called into action this afternoon. Witn full force turned on the forcible forc-ible etream bowled over In quick succession suc-cession eery speaker as he attempted to rl6e and climb to the windows to shout at the people outside. The demonstration de-monstration lasted twenty minutes. When the L W. W.'s finally gave in, the floor of tho prison was six Inches deep with cold water, and the Industrial Indus-trial Workers' bedding were thoroughly thorough-ly soaked. The industrialists started their demonstration de-monstration last night and In consequence con-sequence of this, today were placed on a bread and water diet. When the jailers appeared with the bread the prisoners threw the bread in their faces. Later in the day they took all of their mattresses and Improvised ladders to reach the high windows, from which they addressed the crowds in the court house parlc Warned to desist by the Jailers, I hey refused and cursed them. Jailer Jones turned a weak prison hoso on tho I. W. W.'s but this had no effect. When the chief of police summoned a fire engine, shouting defiance, the prisoners still appeared at the windows win-dows and made efforts to talk. But the full force of the fire stream soon laid them low. |
