Show EXPERTS BLOW OPEN A SAFE Safe Door is Thrown Ten Feet by Explosion, Demolishing a Stove J. L. Moore Loses $97 in Cash Entrance to Store Shows Clever Work of Yeggmen. The safe of J. L. Moore, the mer- chant at Thirtieth street and Washington Wash-ington avenue, was cracked by expert ex-pert safe blowers last night and robbed rob-bed of $97 in cash, some valuable papers pa-pers and the cash drawer. It la thought that the work was performed at about 12 o'clock, or im- j mediately after midnight, as some of the neighbors claim they heard an explosion, ex-plosion, sounding like the discharge of a shotgun in a vacant room. The men who turned the trick understood un-derstood the business for, the officers say, It is a neat Job. The manner of their entrance Into the place Indicated Indicat-ed that they are adepts In tho business. bus-iness. Tho entrance was nitido through the butcher shop, a lean-to at the north side of the store, and through the dodr between the two places Into the main building. The door leading Into the Btore was pried from Its hinges, the Instrument used evidently being a short pinch of hexagon hex-agon steel, sharp at one end and flat and chlsel-Iike at the other. It is believed that the bar was stolen from tho blacksmith shop of Chris Nellson. a short distance from the store. The rear door of the shop was found to have been sprung open. hammer had been taken, from his place. Powerful Explosive. The knob of the safe door was broken brok-en from Its position, this being done, no doubt, with a sledge hammer, and nltro-glycerlne or some other liquid explosive placed In the hole. The explosion ex-plosion must have been terrific, for the safe door was thrown at least ten feet from tho safe, striking the stove and toppling it over, and a table upon which a typewriter rested, knocking tho machine from the table and so damaging it that It will cost considerable consid-erable to repair. The stove was demolished de-molished and it ls considered quito remarkable re-markable that the place was not set on fire, as tho utoo was left lull of fire when the store was closed in the evening. even-ing. The entire loss to the store will approximate $17f. 6ays Mr. Moore. The officers .have been on the lookout look-out for suspicious characters but at a lute hour this afternoon had not found anyone on whom, they could fix the responsibility. Two strangers were hanging around the store last evening, according to clerks of the store, one of them remaining re-maining near the curb while the other seemed to be making investigations as to the entrance to the building. Nothing has been missed from the store except the things taken from the safe. The safe Is a total wreck. Mr. Neilson, not being at home when the place was visited by tho officers, it could not definitely be determined whether tho pinch bar and a sleJge |
