Show PHILANDER C. KNOX. The premier of President Tart's cabinet cab-inet is Philander C-Knox. He is secretary sec-retary of slate and re-enters th cabinet cab-inet after five years In the senate. Like most of his colleagues In the new cabinet Mr. Knox Is a lawyer and first came into national prominence as attorney-general In Mr. McKinley's first cabinet when he successfully proijcuted the Northern Securities cose. Mr. Knox is flfty-slx years old, having been born In Brownsville, Pa., May 6, 1853. After graduating from Mount Union college at Alliance, O., he began tho study of law In Pittsburg and three years later was admitted to the bar In that city. WherfMr. Knox was only twenty-four years of age ho was appointed assistant United States district attorney for the Western West-ern district of Pennsylvania. After a short term in this office, however, he resigned and entered privitrj practice prac-tice with James H. Reed, under the firm name of Knox & Reed. The firm became counsel for many large interests inter-ests and it is said that Mr. Knox lias received some of the largest fees ever paid In this country. During the Homestead riots In 1892 ho was counsel coun-sel for the Carnegie Steel Co., and directed tho legal end of that famous labor disturbance. When In 1901 Mr. JlcKInley appointed hlra a'torney-gen-eral Mr. Knox's participation in the Homestead affair caused some opposition opposi-tion on tho part of labor organizations organiza-tions to his confirmation. As attorney-general Mr. Knox not only prosecuted prose-cuted to a successful issue the government's gov-ernment's suit against the Northern Securities company, but conducted Ihe case against the so-called Beef Trnt with the result that that comblnat'nn was dissolved by the final decree ot the United States supreme court Mr. Knox has been credited also with hazing haz-ing prepared and carried through the Panama canal purchase In 1903. it was shortly after tho conclusion oi the Panama purchase that Mr. Knox was appointed to the United States senate by Governor Pennypacker to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Quay,' and afterward he was elected by the legislature for the full term expiring March, 1911. It was at Mount Union college tbf.t Major McKinley first became acquaint ed with young Knox. Mr. McKiniey was at that time prosecuting attorney of Stark county, and the acquaintance, acquaint-ance, begun when they yen; both young, finally ripened into the friendship friend-ship of later years, and culminated In tho Pennsylvanlan's entry into the second McKinley cabinet. It has always al-ways been understood that Prysldc-n".
