Show CHANGE WILL PLAY WITH CHAMPIONS (By H. M. Walker.) Los Angeles, Jan. 27. "Tell the boys and fans at home that I will be on deck when the whistle blows." Such was the. emphatic statement made to the writer by Frank Chance, peerless' leader of the Chicago champion cham-pion Cubs, today. In view of the fact that negotiations between Chance and President Murphy, presumably over money matters, had been hanging fire for weeks, incidentally that it had been reported many times that Chance would not don a Cub uniform again, the news is particularly gladsome to the fans, who had begun to despair. Chance had just closed negotiations for a California home for himself and family which embraces twenty acres, all of which is under cultivation, principally with oranges, and so when he wrote his check for $10,500 in tho secretary's offica at Santa Ana. he was in k particularly good frame of mind. "I received a letter from Mr. Murphy yetterday morning which set aside all "clfllculties," said. Chance. "It is quite true that w Lave been at outs for some time. It is also true that it was a difference of money and one which not only affected myself, but the entire en-tire team. Through an Intermediary whose name I don't wish to mention at this date we both were made to see that it was of little uso to be pigheaded, pig-headed, henco tho reconciliation. 1 intend answering Murphy's letter in full today and feel sure that semb-lnnco semb-lnnco of friction will be at once wiped out. I have been quoted as saying many things," continued Chanco, "but, believe me, this is tho first interview I have given to the press. On two different occasions I stated I might i.ever don a Tub uniform. Aside from these stories, many have been sent broadcast, all of which have been manufactured man-ufactured out of whole cloth." Questioned as to when he expected to return to Chicago, Chance said: "At the present moment I cannot state delinltely when I will leave. Prob-ubly Prob-ubly not till the very last minute. You see, I have Just purchased a home hero which Is also In the nature of a business enterprise, Inasmuch as I expect ex-pect a revcnu-3 of $10,000 yearly from the orange crops. "Now from the fact that I have closed clos-ed and have the deeds in my possession, posses-sion, much remains to be done in the way of fixing up the place. Nothing else remains to be told only to reiter ate my assurance to the fans at home that I will be there," |
