Show TRIAL OF CALHOUN BEGUN IN SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco, Jan 12. The trial of Patrick, Calhoun on an Indictment charging the offer of a bribe to a public . official, was under way .thl3 morning, ten minutes after the bailiff had sounded the call for order in department de-partment 11 of the superior court, where Judge Wm P. Lawlor presides. Tho entire morning session was devoted de-voted to the examination of talesmen and other preliminary' matters. Mr. Calhoun and his attorney arrived ar-rived a few moments before court convened. con-vened. A moment later Assistant District Dis-trict Attorney Francis J. Heney, entered, en-tered, followed cloly by James Foley Fo-ley and John McCarthy, two special agents of the district attorney's office, who were assigned as personal bodyguards. body-guards. Wm. J. Within the onclosuro, however, every available place was occupied by attorneys, at-torneys, principals, writers, artists and opposing forces of detectives. The formal and somewhat uninteresting proceedings were watched with closo attention and as fast as a seat was vacated, there was an applicant for it, from the waiting group outside. |
