Show REBUILDING MESSINA. The terrible earthquake of but a few days ago has been forgotten and now Messina and Rcgglo are to be rebuilt. re-built. The reconstruction of tho cities cit-ies of Messina, Reggio, Palmo, Bag-Lara, Bag-Lara, etc., having been decided upon, the Italian government will, as soon as the debris left by the earthquake shall have been cleared away, direct the engineer en-gineer corps .of the civil state, or a special commission composed of members mem-bers of that corps, to proceed to divide the areas selected for reconstruction Into building lots. These lots will be bid for by Italian and foreign contract-tors contract-tors who may wish to undertake the construction of new buildings thereon. Anticipating the time when the loca- tion and dimensions or me iois wm do made known, the Public Works Co-operative Society of Lombardy announces announ-ces that It will hold a public competition competi-tion to demonstrate the relative merits of various materials and methods of work and construction adapted for UHe In the devastated regions. - While the competition will deal especially es-pecially with tjpes and systems of construction for urban, rural, and industrial in-dustrial edifices least likely to be affected af-fected by seismic disturbance, the. wldeet latitude will be given competitors competi-tors regarding the exhibits. From present Indications It seems likely that steel and reinforced concrete con-crete will be widely, used in the work of reconstruction and that the height of buildings will be limited to thirty-three feet. It is also probable that only the very lightest materials will be used for floors, ceilings and roofs. |
