Show ILLINOIS LEGISLATURE STILL IN DEADLOCK Springfield, 111., Jan. 27. Few of the legislators who entered today's Joint session for tho election of a United States senator had any doubt of tho existenco ot a deadlock as steadfast as any which has marked the history of Illinois general assemblies, from the days of Governor Shadrach Bond, first governor of the state. Seventeen indecisive ballots had only accentur.t- ed to all apirearance the feeling be: tween the adherents of the different, factions, which may bo divided in a broad way to the Hopkins forces an-t the anti-ilopkins, camp. From tho leaders, through the rank and file, prophecies were freely made that tho situation vould not be cleared for weeks and perhaps months. Some or the legislators considered a plan to ballot continuously and if that failed o loin in one ballot a day until the deadlock wears Itself out or the legislature legis-lature Is adjourned. The program for the houso today I receding the Joint session called for a roll call for the presentation of bills, it being the intention of the house leaders to proceed with the regular reg-ular business of the session regardless cf the deadlock. Voting on the eighteenth joint ballot bal-lot was the order of the day when tho joint session was called to order. |
