Havana, Jan. 28 A new era of Cuban Cu-ban independence dawned today when the affairs of the island, which have been administered by' American ofU-clals ofU-clals for more than two years, as a result re-sult of the revolution against former President Palma In 1906, were formally formal-ly transferred to th" newly-elected na-llve na-llve executives. Januarv 28 will hereafter here-after take rank with May 20 as a natal holiday in Cuba, for it was on the latter lat-ter day in 1902 that the island was first transferred to the Cuban people bv the United States after a period of rehabilitation following the Spanish J war. I The coming of this new day of Cu-ban Cu-ban liberty was signalled by a general display of' fireworks, the screeching of rockets and bombs sending down showers show-ers of golden rain and varl-colored lights. The streets of the city, which were brilliantly illuminated and garlanded gar-landed with chains of incandescent bulbs, were throngeJ until an early hour this morning and a carnival spirit spir-it everywhere prevailed. Thousands of people gathered around the chief clerk's club throughout the night, where Inaugural and farewell balls were held Jointly in honor of President Gomez and Vice-President Zayas, and Governor General Magoon, all three of whom were quickly recognized on entering the building, and leaving It, and were loudly applauded. The ball constituted one of the most brilliant functions held here since the days of Spanish occupation. The ceremonies of today began almost al-most with the dawn and they will not end until long after nightfall. The inaugural parade, in which only nathe troops, civil organizations and the rural guards will participate, will pass under the magnificent triumphal arch erected In Gonzerrate square, facing Central Park and It will bo reviewed re-viewed by President Gomez. It will not 6tart until late this afternoon. One of the first ceremonies of this morning, was the placing of a wreath on the tablet marking the house in which Jo6e Marti, the Cuban patriot, was born. Next came the presentation of the new Cnban flag, which was raised on the flagstaff of the palace, marking the nd of the American Interests. Tho Cuban Cu-ban flag has flown throughout this pe- rlod. the American civil governor and the American officers detailed to supervise super-vise the various governmental departments depart-ments having really served throughout as Cuban ofttclals. The old flag will be sent to Washington and placed In the national museum. Mr. Magoon goes to Knight's Key, Florida, whence he will take a train direct to Washington. The McClellan will proceed to New York. Jose Miguel Gomez goes Into power as the leader of the liberal coalition party, and as a result of the overwhelming over-whelming choice of the Cuban people In the elections last fall. Tho Cubans always held It against former President Presi-dent Palma that he was tho cholco of the American government. No such complaints can be made in the case of President Gomez, for the Americans studiously avoided anything savoring of advice or suggestion as to the candidates can-didates or the platform in the call for the last campaign, i ' President Gomez was escorted this morning from his home directly lo . the Palace by detachments of troops and the rural guards ' He rode In the Fame carriage with Governor Magoon, who called for him with a native military mil-itary guard of honor.
