Show IM SERIOUS PERIL 1 Imprisoned In the tunnel 01 the St. Patrick's mines in HugheB Canyon. above Murray, Utah, with all escape cut off by a cave-In which has closed the tunnel, George and Jerry Peterson, brothers, are in hourly peril of death while Arty mem are working in what seems to be a fruitless attempt to save them. A small pipe caught in the falling debris de-bris is supplying the men with what little air they are getting, but this pipe is so bent and twisted that it is impossible to supply food through it. A message to the Herald at midnight mid-night describes the position of the men as extremely perilous. The water has risen above their knees. Its pressure pres-sure on the walls of the tunnel threatens threat-ens to bring down a rail of earth on their heads. The rescue party, which has been working feverishly, is within a few feet of the prisoners, but has found it necessary to procure timbers and buttress but-tress up tho passage already opened beforo going farther. This may take houre. And in tho meantime the pent-ud pent-ud waters are rising inch by Inch around the helpless miners. Danger from suffocation has been averted by the use of a pump, with which air is forced through tho slender slen-der iron pipe to which the prisoners so far owe their lives. |
