March 10. in a collision in Nantucket Sound about 2 a. m. today, the Eastern Steamship line steamer Horatio Hall was rammed and sunk by tho Metropolitan line steamer IL F. Dimock. The Hall kept afloat long enough to flash news of the accident by wireless to shore points, and to eu-ablo eu-ablo the Dimock to take off all on board, including a few passengers and crew numbering about forty. The Dimock, Di-mock, which was bound from New York for Boston, resumed hor course after the accident, but finding that she was likely to sink, ran ashore at 2:15 o'clock this afternoon, off Orleans Or-leans on the eastern shore of Capo Cod. Boston, March 10. A wireless dispatch dis-patch received by the Metropolitan lino today said that their steamer, tho H. F. Dimock, was In collision in a heavy fog off Newport this morning with the steamer Horatio Hall from Portland. The Metropolitan line's information in-formation was that neither boat was badly damaged, but a dispatch from Newport, at 9:46 a. m., stated that a wireless dispatch, received at the naval na-val station, reported that tho Hall was-badly was-badly damaged below the water line and had been beached to prevent her sinking. Chatham. Mass., March 10 The steamer H. F. Dimock ran down the 6teamer Horatio Hall today, after which the Dimock went ashore a halt mile south of the Orleans life saving station. She has on board the passengers pas-sengers and crew of the Horatio Hall, which, it Is reported, was sunk.There is an -unconfirmed report that the life savers boat, which went to the assistance assist-ance of the steamers, was swamped. The weather is ery thick with a strong southwest wind. Conflicting reports were received here, one stating that the H. F. Dimock Di-mock backed off in about ten minutes, min-utes, and another stating that she was still aground at 2:15 p. m. It is believed be-lieved she was southbound. . 1 |
