China is to he the scene of a vigorous campaign in the interests of the forests, according accord-ing to plans for a series of meetings which will be held under the auspices of Boone college, Wu Cheng, China. There will be meetings in all the largo cities and important ports, both on the coast and Interior. Howard Richards, Rich-ards, Jr., representative in this country coun-try of the college, has been collecting material for these courses. Several of the photographs showing the effect of deforestation In China, which accompanied ac-companied the President's last annual message to congress, from a part of a set of stereoptlcons, which will be used in lllubtratlng these lectures. China has taken little care of her forests. Many parts of the empire are practically desert wastes as a result of the destruction of its trees. On account of the erosion which has followed fol-lowed the removal of trees the farmers farm-ers are compelled to terrace their hillsides hill-sides in order to hold enough soil in place for farming, and to build little walls across the valleys to catch the silt which the annual floods deposit. |
