Show YOUR HEALTH BY DR. R. H. BISHOP. y SCHICK TEST When the discovery of diphtheria antitoxin was madn people thought that tho fight against this disease had been won It was subsequently found, however that The antitoxin must ho administered at a very early ago to be used with effect. Dr. Schick, after a long series of experiments, finally evolved a test which shows whether a given individual indi-vidual io susceptible to dlptherla or not. Wo aro now able to ascertain to a nlcc.y that practically 80 per cent of the new born, 60 to 60 per cent of the children and 90 per cent of the adults are naturally immuno from the disease. This discover! threw a new light on the suread of the disease and explained ex-plained why onlv certain persons take diptherix even when exposed to it. It shows whether a person has sufficient antitoxin in his blood to overcome an Infection with diphtheria diph-theria bacilli. The test is made by injecting a sii.ull amount of dlpthoiia toxin into the skin. If tho blood of the individual tested contains diptheria antitoxin, here will he no apparent result, for the toxin is at once neutralized by the antitoxin. The absence of a reaction, therefore, there-fore, signifies the presence of antitoxin anti-toxin In tho Individual's blood, showing show-ing he Is Immune to diptheria Such persons, however. may becomo car- ' rlers of the disease. If, however, '.here is a reaction to the Schlci: test, i it Indicates that such persons are susceptible to diptheria. They should tako diphtheria antitoxin. . It would bo well for everyone to I make sure that ho is immuno to 1 diphtheria. Consult your physician i and ask him. to aDDly tho Schick test. Schools and communities all over th- nation are thus helping to battle j the disease. It Is the only way ef- foo'.ionally to blot It out. . . |
