Show NEW ROUTE FOR GREAT CHANNELi All- Canadian Waterway Proposed Instead of St. Lawrence Project, OTTAWA, Jan. 9, (By the Associ-ated Associ-ated Press) While the project to provide pro-vide a great international channel -for ocean-going ships by improving the St i . wr'ence river to the Great Like-, is being studied by tho governments of the United Stales and Canada, proponents propo-nents Of ail alternative plan, to proposed propos-ed Ottawa and Georgian Lay canal, are seeking to enlist support for their "all-Canadian" waterway. Advantages claimed for this route over th si. Liwnni-' ship channel include in-clude Its position entirely within Canadian Can-adian territory its immunity from the Ktonn hazards of the lakes and the saving in mileage. As surveyed, the canal would follow the St. Lawrence river from .Montreal westward to the i junction of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Law-rence nvers thence the ttaw.. would bi lollowed to Mattawa and Lake Nip-itsing Nip-itsing and the French river would provide pro-vide outlet from tho Ottawa river to L ike Huron The length of the canal would be 140 miles, with a total lock- lage of 75S feet. Government cnRinocrs have estimated estimat-ed that on the Ottawa and French rivers riv-ers it will be possible to develop 1,000 -(OO horsepower.
