Many of the wards have already en-t en-t ri. uned during the early part of the week HISTORY RETOLD Mrs. David Jensen of the Eighth ward relief socletv gave an interesting account of the history of the organization organiza-tion at the program given bv the v.. .id Tuesday The society Is known! as the oldest women's oraranlsatlon In the United States and was organized I on March 17. 1 S-4 2. under the direc-, direc-, tlon of Joseih Smith. The Mormon church hud been established ten years before, when the women decided that they could be of more assistance in the settling of the west if they were banded together. Previous to the date of the organizing, or-ganizing, Lyra R. Snow drew up a constitution and by-laws for such a society, but acting upon the advice oi Joseph srftlth., who re. om mended the Idea, another constitution was drawn up and on March 17, the v omen om-en were banded together in what was then known aa "The Female Relief society of Nauvoo " This name was later than?ed to relief society WARDS CELEBRATE With the Organization of the so-Ciety, so-Ciety, Mrs. Joseph Smith was elected president, with her counselors. Mrs. Sal th M Cleveland and Mrs. Bllza-j Bllza-j both Ann Whitton. to assist her. Any woman was admitted to the so- let wh.i was willing to help Six years aftei the birth of the society, other women banded together in dlf-f dlf-f rent organizations and clubs, but these have gradually died out.
