Show OF THE TRE R OUR some are born great sonic soine f rea ancs and some have bave great greatness nem th thrust upon ahcin cill sila X k SE SENATOR SHERMAN THE CHEAT manciel mANC FINAN IEH ClEn during the present session of congress no subject is occupying occupy in greater prominence prominence romi nence in the co councils n cg s of the glenade senate than that of finance shall or shall not the public debt be refunded at a lower than present rate cf ef interest senator sherman thinks that it should be refunded at three per cent which view of a great question is opposed by those who would legislate for the payment of the tile debt and consequently lydo do all they can to defeat any scheme that tends to defer said payment as refunding ati at i low rate of interest undoubtedly would do on the other hand land senator slier mans proposal is favored by those who see in tho the continuance of tho the debt a source of strength th to the government in that a large arge number er of persons arc are directly interested in in its iti financial policy his record recard gives tho the subject of this sketch great authority on oil the question of finance ho he is an ohio man born at lancaster on the of may 1823 in a family of english extraction whose first american ancestry settled in connecticut and massachusetts his ilis father charles robert sherman was made madea a judge of tho the supreme court of ohio tho the same year in in which john was born the ei eighth bali child of a family of twelve when anthen his father died john was only Y years rs old and the widows eleven surviving children were divided by harsh necessity only three of them being left al ni their mothers care in 1831 john was taken by a cousin of his father named john sherman to live with him at mount vernon this kinsman had him thoroughly lily prepared for the tile academy in in anticipation of giving him a C college education at twelve young john entered the academy at lancaster while in the sophomore class the youth was decided to a change of intention and we nye next find him acting as junior rod man in a corps of engineers enci engineers eng engaged ag ged in the muskingum ngum improvement in 1838 when only fifteen he was div en charge of the works at beverly his next move was to study law in the office of charles T sherman an older brother who afterwards was made ninde a judge of the united states Dl district strict court ho entered into partnership with his brother at mansfield in 1844 four years later he lie began his political life lif c as dele delegate aate to the whig convention wb which i nominated general taylor for president in the same year 1848 he married a daughter daugh tei of judge stewart wart of mansfield he was delegate in the baltimore re convention of 1852 which nominated general scott his first election to congress was in 1855 where he lie gained destine tion don in committee work he was a supporter of john fremont in 1856 believing believing that the area of slavery abbo not be extended while the 11 institution its itself self could not be disturbed in the states which support supported ed it mr sherman was elated to the and con gress and was near being elected as S aress ie r in the latter when in carcil march A 1861 salmon P chase retired from the tile senate jolin john sherman was elected to take liis his place and was elected reelected re in 1867 and 1873 he 10 was conspicuous for patriotism in the war spending money time tim e and service in the federal cause the tile making treasury notes a legal tender in ill 1862 1802 was mainly due to him and salmon P chase in 1867 he lie proposed the refunding act passed in 1870 and the resumption of specie payments on january 1879 was the leading triumph of his financial policy president hayea hayes made him secretary of the treasury in march 1877 upon retirement from office with the incumbency of president garfield the veteran financier lancier f il resumed his scat ecat in the tile united states senate to whose deliberations ho he gives the weight of great ability and experience peri ence |
