There are four "stiffs," and one badly bad-ly mired pair of trousers around the Standard-Examiner today as the result of an athletic carnival staged by a portion por-tion of the editorial staff, the sporting "stiff," an Ogden newspaper magnate and one whirlwind circulator Tho whole thing began after the paper pa-per had been put to bed yesterday afternoon af-ternoon and tho participants gathered about the business office and began chawing about their physical prowess in their younger days. They ran thel 100-yard dash in 9 seconds flat, Jumped 7 feet from a standing start and cov-l cred the half-mile In 1 minute flat. I At least, this is what they said. Abe Glasmann put an end to the gab I when he offered to lake anyone present pres-ent over tho hundred yard distance for ten buckn. The rest of the staff, not having committed burglary recently, were unable to cover the bet, but they offered to wager malted milks, even ; at the present price. j Tho former world champions repair ed to the back lot where they found a muddy track and after several elbow- j Ing matches they began arguing anew.. Finally a race was started and Bran-' , don, seeing the field far ahead, fell in the mud and demanded a new race. ! An automobile was commandeered and the champ3 embarked for Lorin Farr park, where the neighborhood Is not no congested. Here they doffed three clean collars and ono soiled one and lined, up for the start. Tho gun roared and off went the sprinters with Glasmann elbowing everyone ev-eryone to the rear. Warden shot out ahead and led the field until his eye I was attracted by a traffic sign which Baid, "Slow down to thirty miles." The sporting editor then lost InteresL Tlmmerman, who until this time had been running behind Glasmann, suddenly sud-denly went crazy from the blur of color reflected from Abe's silk shirt and shot out in front of tho field. Brandon Bran-don could not find another mud puddle pud-dle in which to fall, so brought up the rear. Timmerman, now completely complete-ly overcome from passing the riotous shirt, led the field to the finish, with Glasmann second, Warden third and Brandon figuring up the price of four malted milks. A relay was then arranged with Glasmann and Warden competing against Brandon and Timmerman. which resulted in a dead heat and ended end-ed the afternoon's performance. Tho results: Four stiff backs and an end to the arguments 100-yard dash: Timmerman, Timmer-man, won; Glasmann, second; Warden, War-den, third; Brandon, fourth.
