Show ! DR. VANCE'S DAILY ARTICLE s BY DR. JAMES I. VANCE. Founder of Intcr-Church World Movc-I tnont and Chairman, Federal Council! of Churches of America. I This lady has been worshipped r. ' long time. She is a popular divinity.! Men lmve laid on her altar their rich-! est gifts, and she has often had tho; sacrifioo or hunum life. What is it! men will not give and do to be free? Cut what Is it that makes liberty divine? Is the love of freedom holy because it lets a man do anything he' wants to? Such liberty is a physical' impossibility, not to speak of its social so-cial and moral limitations. The tni"' emanacipation is that which releases' lifo f5r Its full functions, that enables the Individual to achieve the highest , self-development and that at the sanif ' time makes him of largest servlco' to his felloyvmon. Any liberty that makes a man less a man that dwarfs his' development de-velopment or cripples his usefulness, I Is not divine. And lo seek It is to mis-j take a swamp llg.it for a star. No man should want to be free to I I wrong hlmseir. Vice and crime are! not the marks of greatness. They nrei deformities. Why then fasten fhem-i selves on lifo is a question in the same' I " class as that which deals with the disease that fevers the body or the blight that spoils the rose. They arc all bnd, and to seek to be freo enougli to bo a dwarf or a cripple or a con sumptlvo is to sigh for the paradise of fools. Neither should one want to be freo enough to injure his fellowrnen. Life is a Hocial proposition. While the individual' in-dividual' has rights, he has no right that licenses him to destrov the rights of his fellowrnen. The notion that civ. ilizatlon is to be promoted by class greed, whether the class bo capital or labor, Is the height of folly. Millenniums Millen-niums are not hastened by hate. They come only as a good-will Is fostered, and tho very essence of a better world 13 In the law of love. The liberty tho world noeds is not permission for a man to do anything ho wants to, but an emancipation thac will lead him to do right, and to do unto others as he would .have others do unto him. ft is a Golden Rule freedom free-dom that the real Goddess of Liberty dispenses. God Himself has no higher freedom than this. "If the Son shall make you free, ye shall be tree indeed." in-deed." J 1 |
