Elimination of the war customs duty of 7 1-2 per cent and the- substitution of luxury taxes on expensive wearing' apparel, Jewelry, sporting equipment and other articles heretofore exempt are provided provid-ed for in tho new taxation proposals submitted to parliament late today by Sir Henry Drayton, minister of finance. fi-nance. The Increased revenue, expected expect-ed to be derived from tho new taxes is to bo used largely in the payment of war loans and Interest. One of tho principal features of the new bill is a tax of ono per cent on the sales of all manufacturers, wholesale whole-sale Jobbers and importers. Sales by retailers and' exporters do not come under this tax and a long list of foodstuffs food-stuffs and other necessaries also is exempt. The tax on beer, wines and spirits is increased from 30 cents to $3 a gallon. A general increase of five per cent $5,000 a year and over. |
