The uncertainty in baseball still is the most interesting element in the popular national sporL While the Red Sox, wished into seventh place by many and into the cellar by the rest, were winning five straight games, the Tigers were losing that many. And after the Bengal tribe had dropped the fifth straight the members began wondering why was it? "If I believed in things of the sort I'd certainly say there is a curse on this club," said Owen Bush, veteran shortstop. "If it Isn't one thing it's another. I don't know what's the matter now. We've just been playin rotten baseball and the pitching is bad, too. "Of course, it is spring and the season sea-son is young, but I've been telling the fellows that these defeats count just as much as they would in September. Septem-ber. A game lost is a game lost and It goes down in the percentages that way. You can't erase it after the season is under way and the team rounds into its true form. "Year after year we've had what looked like tho best team and we couldn't deliver. "Take last fall for example we haven't any excuses. We just broke and played poor baseball after that great drive. "And I for one am not complaining because wo didn't get that 600 bucks apiece that went to the third place club. We lost by a fraction of a game and we didn't deserve the money, the Mays case notwithstanding." Owen looked a little discouraged as he delivered the above. And his attitude atti-tude was typical of the Tiger clan. Jennings seems puzzled and Jack Coombs, still his tactiturn self, sits on the bench and looks very thoughtful. The fans thought Coombs was the man that would bridge the gap between be-tween the Tigers and pennant land. But his pitchers got a mighty rotten starL Phenoms of the southern camps, they looked like bums when they hit the big time. And the regulars were not right despite the careful training they'd been put through by Jack. No doubt Detroit will swing into first division stride very soon, but in the meantime Hughey Jennings and Jack Coombs are not hilarious with joy. |
