Taylor, chief clerk of the Hallway Mall service here returned to this city from San Francisco last night after attending a conference of chief i clerks of the eight division of the service ser-vice at which Avere present Otto Prae-ger, Prae-ger, second assistant postmaster general, gen-eral, and Colonel J. A. Jordan of the fGderal aerial mail service. Tho conference which began Wednesday Wed-nesday morning and was continued throughout Thursday and Friday of last week was entirely taken up with matters of the federal aerial mail service ser-vice from New York to San Francisco. According to statements made by the responsible officials, the air service will be in full sw(ing by September and will effect a saving of time in the delivery of mail between thoso two cities of two days, it is said. Nevada Sites. Before their arrival at San Francisco Francis-co Mr. Praeger and Colonel Jordan had selected the sites in Nevada, one landing land-ing field will be at Battle Mountain and the other at Reno. These officials also Inspected sites .at Oakland, San Francisco and Redwood city, but no definite choice was made last week. There will, however', bo two fields proximate prox-imate to the city of San Francisco, one of which will bo used as an alternative field when the const city is under fog. This alternative field will undoubtedly undoubted-ly be located at Redwood City, says Mr. Taylor. No announcement was made at the conference about the landing field In the state of Utah at all. Neither was any definite word concerning it given out to the pre.33. In the South. Colonel Jordan and Praeger are visiting vis-iting El Paso, Tex., and Now Orleans this week with regard to the location of fields In the south. From New Orleans Mr. Praeger goes on to visit fields in tho eastern states, and Colonel Jordan returns to his headquarters head-quarters office at Washington, D. C. 500 Planes. It was stated at the conferenco that a year from the date of commencement commence-ment of the aerial mail service there Will bo five hundred planes employed. The service to be instituted between the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, an approximate distance of 500 miles, will ensure the delivery of mail In four hours. According to Mr. Taylor what the government is asking Is that cities present pre-sent the site for landing fields, which, on being accepted by the government for tho aerial mall service, will bo kept up and maintained by the federal authorities. |
