Show 35 GOVERNORS P1CKEDJN FULL Thirty-two U. S. Senators Will Also Be Chosen in Next Elections CHICAGO, May IS. Thirty-five states will elect governors next fall at the time when the president and vice president arc chosen. Thirty-two United States senators, to take offico March i, 1921, also are to be selected. Of the governors Avhose terms expire ex-pire next year twenty-two are Republicans Repub-licans and thirteen Democrats; while 17 of the 32 senators aio Democrats and fifteen Republicans. The 35 governorships to be filled offer of-fer a wide range, both in terms and salaries. Among the state executives whoso terms expire are Frank O-Lowden, O-Lowden, of Illinois, thes. highest paid governor in thcountry; and S. R. Mc-Kelvie, Mc-Kelvie, of Nebraska, the poorest .paid. Mr. Lowden receives ?12,000 yearly for a four-year term and McKelvie $2500 annually for two years. Only twelve of the 35 will receive over $5000 a year; and five will be paid $3000 or less. Governor Coolidgc, of Massachusetts, Massachu-setts, whose position carries a $10,000 salary, is the only governor in the country elected for one year. All other states have either two or four-yqar terms. Territorial governors are better paid than the average sUte oxecutive and two of the four are appointed for indefinite terms, with tne result mat they remain in office as long, as a rule, as tho president who named them. Francis Burton Harrison, governor general of the Philippines, tops the list of territorial executives with an Indefinite term and a $20,000 yearly salary. Arthur Yager, governor of Porto Rico, receives $10,000 and is appointed ap-pointed for an indefinite term. Governor Gov-ernor Thomas Riggs, Jr., of Alaska, and C. J. McCarthy, of Hawaii, each received" annual salaries of $7000 during dur-ing their four year terms. Among the state which elect governors gov-ernors this year, with the incumbent, his politics, salary and term of office, are: Arizona, T. E. Campbell, Republican, Republi-can, $6500, 2 years. Colorado, O. H. Shoup, Republican, $5000, 2 years. Idaho, D. W. Davis, Republican, $5000, 2 years. Montana, S. V. Stewart, Democrat, $7500, 4 years. Utah, S. Bamberger, Democrat, $6000, 4 years. |
