Show ' KIND OF MEN WOMEN WILL CHOOSE ' I Women's Choice of Presidential Candidates Will Depend on Character IH V ; H By LUCY G. BltA.HAM, A. 31., Johns Hopkins UnJvorsIty; Xatlonal Organizer, "Woman's Party. A man's charactor is usually an index in-dex to the things a man stands for, and women will give careful consideration consider-ation to his personality. Look over the list of social changes that women have advocated, and. the adoption of which they have influenced influenc-ed take the child labor Jaws, for instance, in-stance, better conditions for working women in morchantilo and factory work (there is much to bo dono yet), decreased hours of labor for women, equal pay for equal work, benefits, civic Improvements, woman suffrage, etc. It is plain to see that women who have given their lives to such interests arc willing to place in office only a man who will cooperate In improvements im-provements of this charactor. There aro several imminent issues in the minds of many women at present, pre-sent, born of natural circumstances, one the condition of the public and high school teachers, both in regard to their low pay and to the attempt at muzzling freedom of speech among them, thus decreasing efficiency and personal ' initiative where it is most needed. Homeless Families. The second question women aro asking ask-ing is what Is to become of the wives and children of deportees, for whom the men's department of Justice and Congress combined, have forgotten to make any provision These homeless mothers and babies nre to be found wandering around in nearly every city I of the country. Unless a candidate for the office of president can establish a record for some of these things already done, his oratorical promises will not get him J the woman's vote. ) Wleltl Strong Influence. Women wlold a strong influence in j their communities. Their opinion is respected because they have devoted their time to securing better civic conditions, con-ditions, better schools and better economic eco-nomic conditions for working women and children, but their influence has been strengthened a .hundred-told where thoy have boon given the ballot, bal-lot, so that they may directly participate partici-pate in government. In 29 states, 17,-OOOtOOO 17,-OOOtOOO are entitled to vote for tho next presidential ca,ndidatu whether op not the federal amendment Is ratified. rati-fied. Will Vofo Cnrqrtilly. As the presidential election approaches ap-proaches these voting women (ire facing fac-ing the responsibility of trying to elect to office the men who will bo 'in sympathy wi)h the larger humanl-. tarian work to which they devoted so many years of their lives. I do not. believe womon generally, will be swayed by rhetorical political ; spellbindfng. They are- going to vote very carefully bocause their past experience- in local afafirs will guide them in selecting a man who has a I record for past achievement, for ac-tion, ac-tion, not for words. And a man wno cannot show a record for having ac-complishod ac-complishod something constructive in the interest of his fellow man, I be-Ucvo be-Ucvo cannot make a popular appoal to the women of the country. |
