Show I Reelect Senator Smoot li An Editorial by James P. Casey As election day approaches, the voters of Utah must take stock of their oun welfare, which in the majority is always the general welfare of the community at large, and vote accordingly. The people peo-ple want a change from the present system of mismanagement and gross extravagance in governmental affairs, and they have become disgusted with Mr. Wilson "s plan to force his particular league ol nations on this nation in the face of a majority of the people who oppose it unless it is safeguarded with reservations that will guarantee guaran-tee the preservation of American rights from usurpation by auy su pcrgovernment. And each day finds new recruits to the general movement to get back to a constitutional form of government. Such men as William Jennings Bryan. Senator James Reed of Missouri, Senator Gore of Oklahoma, Senator Myers of Montana and a long-list long-list of other prominent statesmen are diametrically opposed to the policies advocated by Mr Wilson add Mr Cox and their defection alone is sufficient to guarantee the defeat of Mr. Cox and Mr. Roosevelt Roose-velt on next Tuesday. But in addition to this serious break in the Democratic ranks, is the large number of men and women who arc nominally Republicans, but who voted for Wilson in 1016 on the theory that he would keep us out of war. This year they arc back in the Republican party bccr.use they do not want to be fooled the second time So there is good ground for the general assumption that Harding will win an overwhelming victory. With these facts before them, the people of Utah cannot afford to overlook the importance of returning Reed Smoot to the senate He is a national ligure, recognized by men of both parties as the greatest authority on government finances and tariff legislation in the senate, and these matters will be of vital importance to every wage-earner and every taxpayer in the state of Utah during th" next four yearn. With B Republican president and a Republican majonty in congress, Senator Smoot will undoubtedly be made chairman chair-man of the appropriations committee, a place that will reflect much credit and put him m a position to do even greater things for the state than he has done in the past And in re-electing Senator Smoot the voters of Utah will be doing themselves a much greater service than they do him, for his line statesmanship and long experience, coupled with his untiring energy, will keep Utah in the forefront ol western states. A vote for Senator Smoot on November 2 is a vote for the common com-mon welfare of Utan and the west. It is a pledge to progress and development and the protection of every industry that makes for genera) prosncrit) JAMES P. CASEY, Salt Lake City.
