Applause and shouts of 'bravof" from the sperta- i tors In the court room Thursday greeted slgnor Franchinl during his summing up of the case against Alfredo Al-fredo Cocchi who Is charged with the murder in Now York City of Ruth Cruger, an eighteen-year-old hi-h school student. Signor Franchlni asked for the conviction con-viction of the prisoner for the murder in the first degree, attempted criminal ;issaults. falsifying passports and false enrollment in the military service, with the maximum penalty on all of tho charges. He disposed of the claim of the defense de-fense saying Cocchi was not sober at tho time of the commission of tho murder owing to his having drung five glasses of California wine, saying: "California wine may -be strong. but no wine ln the world, whether from California or elsewhere Is strong enough to drive a man to commit such a dnstardly deed." Cocchi sat apparently unmoved during dur-ing the three hours' discourse, even when the spectators repeatedly rose and hurled scornful epithets at him |
