Show j 00 ( ST. PATRICK'S DAY. . I 1 This is St. Patrick's day. The wearing wear-ing of thegreen is in evidence and the wearers of tho green are not all Irish, either, for the Irishman is a great maker of friends and many join him in wearing a bit of Ireland's color. Incidentally the seventeenth of March is the anniversary of the launching of construction work on the Ogden-Lucin cut-off. Tho day the first scraper went to work to construct the grade was the occasion of Ogdon's greatest St. Patrick's day celebration. .And who was St. Patrick? It happens hap-pens that little is known of the apostle apos-tle of Ireland. It is probable that his birthplace was at Eannaventa in Northaratonshire, England, where he was captured by raiding Irish when he was about lfi years of age. He was carried to North Ireland ' where he rsporit'six years' as a slave.. Then he escaped, went to Gaul where he became be-came a monk.1 After receiving ihe papal pa-pal benediction in 431- he returned to Ireland as n missionary. He is said to' "have found all Irish heathen and left it all Christian." Tradition puts his death in 402 or 493 but ICS is the more probable date. |
