Show POSSIBLE EPIDEMICS FATTEN ON H. C. OF L. Washington. The loss of resisting power through the high cost of livinc will cause "serious apprehension" m the event of a n-currenee of epidemic say Dr. Louis L. Harris of the New York cfiy department of health, in a letter to A. F. of L. Secretary Frank Morrison. The medical man called the unionist's union-ist's attentiton tn a study of the effects of the high cost of living upon the health of citizens of New York, and stated that he believed the conditions set forth to be typical of the majority of American families. "This study undertaken officially and in a dispassionate spirit," writes Dr. Harris, "has revealed the existenvc of a considerable amount of deprive tion and wanl I have reason to know that since this study was completed conditions have, if anything, becomt worse. In view of the fact that according accord-ing to various studies which have been made, there nre probably more than 4,000,000 persons sick in this country at any given time, it is of great moment, mo-ment, from an economic lewpoint, to consider how gravely the sick arc-handicapped arc-handicapped in their recovery and convalescence con-valescence because of the high cost of ll ing. "Properly interpreted, the facts pre sentt d in this report would seem to indicate in-dicate that many who are suffering from the effects ol the high cost of living liv-ing will have their power of resistance tn vnrimm Hi5pjifir-s LTpatlv wr:iltpnril and this would be a cause of serious appreln nsion in the event of a recurrence recur-rence of the epidemic of influenza and pneumonia." |
