Show I STIFF BATTLE FOR OAK FIRST BASE JOB BOYES SPRINGS, March 5 Red Allen, Al-len, recruit first baseman, reported for practice this morning, which brought tho roster of the Oaks to fifteen, Including In-cluding Howard, tho boss. Allen is a big, husky fellow, who appears to be a likely candidate for the initial bag. Morning practice today included tho I use of the volley ball, which tho boss declares is the best eye developer in existence. In the afternoon Howard I applied a liberal dose of batting prac- i tice, following which the skipper took a number of the squad on a hike. When last seen, the brave walking crew was disappearing In the distance of No Man's Land, "somewhere in the Sonoma mountains." With two ambitious men cavorting around the first sack, it looks as though Rube Gardner would better be hitting the cushions for camp, for he no doubt has a man's size job on his hands if he intends to oust the two recruits, re-cruits, Allen and Perry. Billy Kirby is organizing his giants for a battle with the Oaks in the near future. Kirby says to look out for his team this year, as ho is scouring the valley for the best talent he can nab. |
