Show oo A WARNING VOICE IS HEARD. The Standard has referred to the fact that in the past, when defeat has befallen kings and emperors, royalty has been so interrelated as to be able to save the offenders by interceding for them. But, In the (jase of the kaiser, the Standard has said that the fallen master of Germany will be without special pleaders at court, for all royalty is now under the ban. An English writer in "The British Weekly" somewhat jars us by openly hinting, that perhaps King George will attempt to intercede to save his cousin, the former emperor. Here is a quotation quota-tion from the Weekly, which even Americans will class as rather plain speaking: We write with the greatest hesitation hes-itation about the influence of the court, but it is of no uso to mince ' matters, and the suspicion Is wide- ly diffused that the kaiser is to be protected as the king of Greece was mysteriously protected for long. Wo wholly disbelieve this inference. We have had a model king and queen throughout this war, patient, wise, loving, tactful, unwearied in effort and self-sacrifice. They, we believe, would be the last to screen tho kaiser from whatever may be the just reward of his deeds. But to show how public opinion Is running we shall quoto the utterance of a leading minister of tho Church o Scotland, Scot-land, Dr. Hugh G. Yatt of St-Enoch's St-Enoch's parish church, Dundee, printed In the Dundee Advertiser. Referring to Mr. Winston Churchill, Church-ill, Dr. Watt said: "Watch your own city member. Alas! for the cause if he speaks for all. 'Unconditional surrender' means, he has been telling us, 'the crushing of millions of misguided people in the dust. The Dundee Advertiser (sanest and loyalest war organ in the kingdom) calls this 'mere rhetoric' With less politeness po-liteness I call it a lie. Mr. Churchill Church-ill knows It to be a lie, knows that unconditional surrender means the liberation of these mil-lions mil-lions of misguided people from the miseries of misguidance, and that is tho only possible liberation." Dr. Watt continued: "What is the government game? If the suspicion gets Into the public pub-lic mind that the Hohenzollern dynasty dy-nasty Is to be untouched, and the devil of Prussian militarism left on the throne, lest tho good King George loso his throne, God help the good King George. Let your voice bo heard. . . . Let statesmen states-men be warned in time. The crisis cris-is is serious. God forbid that the guns of the people's armies should be trained on the government offices of-fices in Whitehall to demand from his majesty's ministers, their unconditional un-conditional surrender. Until militarism mili-tarism goes and militarism Is not a section of German kultur; it is the whole of It the world is enslaved. Let the people speak. The voice of the people in this case is the voice of God. Here Is no uncertain sound; here is no darkness." nn |
