Ho was cdu-- cdu-- lated in the schools of this city and state and the ncntered his father's "lator years Mr. Scowcroft' became member" of the firm of John Scowcroft Scow-croft & Sons company, which is at nreent one of the largest wholesale drv goods and grocery houses in the iniermountain country. While Mr, Scowcroft has always been an active , member of the big firm, he has also been active in the promotion of other things of interest to the community. He never missed an opportunity to render aid wherever possible m bringing bring-ing to the state conventions and meetings, meet-ings, no matter whether they were to bo held in Ogden or Salt Lake. He was an enthusiastic booster for the slate as well as the city. Mr. Scowcroii was one oi me pio- neer motion picture men of the city, ' if not the stale. He was the owner : I of the first motion picture, theater in '" ! Ogden, and r.t the time of his death I'' was the president and principal owner H of the Alhnmbra theater in this city, e He also wns president of the Ogden pictures corporation. It was through i i .Mr. Scowcroft':; efforts the American i ' theater in Salt Lake v?is erected. This :' theater, together with the Rex , and : ; Liberty theaters of Salt Lake, were 1 controlled by Mr. Scowcroft's com- pany before they were sold to H. W. Swanson and associates. Motion pic-tures pic-tures were a hobby with Mr. Scow- i croft, and it was largely through his efforts that tho industry wns raised r to the present high plane It occupies in the city and state. Not onl was Mr. Scowcroft active ' in the affairs of the Scowcroft mer- cantilo house and motion picture '. houses, but he also had rendered aid in the development of several mining j ALBERT SCOWCROFT. distrlces in Utah and Nevada. He also was interested in many of the big companies of the city, among which were tho Amalgamated Sugar company com-pany and the Lcishmann company. Mr. Scowcroft "was many times tendered ten-dered nomination for offices in the city and for the state legislature, but he always declined. He was the president pres-ident or the Ogden Harvest Festival and Fashion show, and was one of the originators of the annual celebration. He was one of the ardent supporters for the 1919 celebration which was (planned for next year, but which was j abandoned because of the war. Mr. Scowcroft was a member of the Weber club. Ogden Publicity bureau and the B. P. O. Elks. He is survived by his widow, two children, his mother. Mrs. Mary Fletcher Scowcroft, and the following brothers and sisters: Joseph, Willard and Heber Scowcroft, Mrs. George W, McCune and Mrs. Alva L. Scovillc. The body was removed to the Lind-quist Lind-quist chapel to be prepared for burial and the funeral arrangements will be announced later. |
