This I! fcsilding, remembered by many Ogden ! residents, was a small frame structure j located, on lower Twenty-fifth street between Liticoln and Grant avenues. 7hls small edifice was built by Father ; latrreace Scanlan, afterwards Bishop of the diocese of Salt Lake. The lit -' Ue church was dedicated in June, 1S79, j bf Archbishop Alemany of San Fran-; Fran-; clico and the first high mass ever cele-i cele-i brated in Ogden was sung by Father i Scanlan. ; In 1SS2, Father P. M. Cushnahan, ! then a young man just out of the semi-l semi-l nary, came to Ogden and he has re- mained in continuous charge of the 3 church in Ogden ever since. It is ,! somewhat unusual for a man of any l religious faith" to remain as pastor of ihe same congregation for thirty-six 'I years, and how well Father Cushna,? j." ban has fulfilled his duties is evidenced j by the fact that he today numbers i inong his intimate friends thousands o( the residents of Ogden who are not v of his faith. But a few years after ' lie advent of Father Cushnahan to 4 0den, the foundation of tho present SL Joseph's church was laid, although jfj construction of the building proper did j cot proceed for some years. At the j time of the laying of the foundation, II the pastor was considered somewhat j of a visionary in ihnt the size of the Jt plins for the new church were con-Jidered con-Jidered by many as entirely too largo for any future needs of Ogden. The , comer stone of the new church was : laid by Bishop Scanlan in 1901, though tho edifice was not completed for li wme little time after. In 187G, at the Invitation of the Rev. Lawrence Scanlan, seven sisters of tho Holy Cross came, to Ogden and opened the school known today ns theJBacred Heart academy. The first location of this institution was in the building afterwards aft-erwards tho Lawrence hotel, on the corner of Twenty-sixth and Washington Washing-ton avenue. It was not until 1802 that the present magnificent structure on Twenty -fifth street, was erected. This institution, having such a humble beginning, be-ginning, has today earned for Itself tho reputation of being one of the finest fin-est educational institutions ia the in -tcrmountain country, ' and numbers among its pupils, students from all of the surrounding states. The extent of the grounds is about five acres and the buildings are thoroughly modern. It is needless to say that, as educational educa-tional methods have advanced, the sisters sis-ters have kept step with the march of progress and today offer one of the most advanced and comprehensive academic aca-demic and commercial courses to be had anywhere In the state. In 1S06 the extent of the parish of St. Joseph had reached such proportions propor-tions that one man could no longer .handle the multitude of duties constantly con-stantly arising and the Rev. John Ryan was sent' here as an assistant to Father Fath-er Cushnahan. From 1906 to 195, Father Ryan served the Catholic population popu-lation of the city as assistant pastor when he was transferred to Eureka, Utah, and was succeeded here by the Rev. John Lagan who is the present assistant pastor of SL Joseph's parish. May 10, 1914, witnessed the death of Bishop Scanlan who had been the 'first Catholic priest in Ogden and on August Au-gust 24 of the same year the Rt. Rev. Jos. S. Glass, C. M. D. D., of Los Angeles, An-geles, was consecrated bishop of Salt Lake diocese. Qne of the first official acts of the new bishop was to name Father Cushnahan as vicar general of the diocese which position he holds today. to-day. Later at the special request of Bishop Glass, the pope at Rome raised Father Cushnahan to a membership in tho papal household and conferred upon him the title of monslgnor. Tho solemn ceremony of investiture took place at Ogden on October 14, 1917, the Rt. Rev. Archbishop Hanna of San Francisco, officiating. This ceremony cere-mony by far the most elaborate and important in the history of the state, was attended by the most prominent Catholic clergy in the west and was witnessed by hundreds of Ogden people, peo-ple, together with numbers of residents resi-dents from tho surrounding cities. jgjl "s ' y-w,33& WWW, ; v.ecr ,, ...
