Show oo DEHORN THE CALF WHILE ITS YOUNG AMES, la., July 27. Animal hus-bandrymen hus-bandrymen at Iowa State college recommend rec-ommend tho use of caustic potash for dehorning calves. It requires less time and trouble and carries less danger of Infection than tho old practice of sawing saw-ing off the horns when the animal grows older. It is a much more hu-mano hu-mano practice, besides having these other advantages. Tho operation may be performed at any season of tho year and should be done when the calf is a very few weeks old and the little horns or "buttons" have appeared. The hair Is clipped away around the horn and a slight cut Is made in the horn with tho shears. The caustic is applied by rubbing the tip of the stick on the horn until it becomes be-comes red or shows signs of bleeding. Tho stick potash should be used rath-or rath-or than the solution. With this method there is no setback In the growth of tho animal |
