Show NO TRANSPORTATION FOR CITY SERVANT SALT LAKE), March 16 - Dan B.I Shields, attorney general of the state, j has been asked by R. N Young, sec-rotary sec-rotary to Mayor W. Mont Ferry, for an opinion as to whether or not the provisions of the recently enacted ' utilities law. that no public servant may accopl free transportation, will I be effective with regard to city employes em-ployes whose transportation free of charge is allowed for in franchise provisions. Under the provisions of the fran- j chise of the Utah Light & Traction I company members of the police, fire and health departments may ride on street cars without charge, especially when In uniform. The members of the departments are not able to determine deter-mine for themselves whether or not the provisions of the new law will take from them the privileges provided provid-ed in the franchise and the mayor's secretary has undertaken to have the question answered through an opinion opin-ion from the attorney general. Following is the letter to the attorney at-torney general, forwarded yesterday: "It is our understanding that the recently enacted utilities bill forbids any public official r employe to re celve transportation corporations "Will you kindly favor this office with an opinion as to how this provision pro-vision affects the employes of the police, po-lice, fire and health departments of cities where the franchise granted traction companies provides that such employes shall be carried free when in uniform and where free transportation transporta-tion is furnished other employes of such departments who are not required re-quired to wear uniforms? Will the new law have nny effect on the provisions pro-visions of a franchise granted prior to the 'enactment of such law?" ' |
