Show I II Ufi HJH 111 iH llll 1 1 by WILLIAM BRADY.mdo Do You Eat TooMuch? Every well fed doctor who really , knows his job these days tells all his patients they eat too much. Not in 1 ao many words, you understand He I goes about it like this: Your metabolism meta-bolism is disturbed, your oxidation process is slow, your ductless glands are driven too hard, your blood pre- turc is a trifle too high, your "biliousness" "bilious-ness" is due to your wrong diet. -your . autointoxication demands Bulgarian bacillus cultures and more vegetarian diet, your stomach trouble is the result re-sult of a low-gTade kidney lesion which requires careful dieting, your 1-S5 of energy at the very prime of I life is due to incipient arterio-sclerosis and clearly points the need of diet- etic restrictions and a vacation in the I country. All of which is a roundabout, rounda-bout, pleasant, professional way of saying: You gormand. quit stuffing! No two communities and no two individuals have the same conception of a normal appetite and a normal ration. Eating is largely regulated i by custom and environment, and rarely indeed by a common sense or , scientific determination of the proper amounts of food. Here is a sample menu which c"n-ititutes c"n-ititutes what is called a maintenance ration for a man of thirty-five in fair health, weighing 150 pounds, doing office work Breakfast Fruit in season. One ilice of bread and butter or toast. One egg. One cup of coffee, containing contain-ing one ounce of milk or one-third ounce of cream and one teaspoonful of sugar. Lunch. One slice of bread and butter. Piece of meat 5x3x'. inches One potato the size of a lemon. A cup of tea with milk and sugar. A small dish of ice cream, pudding or pie. Dinner. A slice of bread and butter. but-ter. Small cup of consomme. Two ounces of peas. Two ounces of squash. (An ounce is two tablespoon-fuls.) tablespoon-fuls.) Piece of meat same size as for lunch: or two ounces of macaroni with cheese. Small dish of any vegetable vege-table salad. Baked potato the sire of an egg Fresh fruit Small cup of coffee with same amounts of sugar and cream as tor breakfast If a man were, say, forty pounds overweight and wished to reduce his wcieht. this diet would probablv serve the purpose. But for a man , of normal weight the diet just maintains main-tains weight and places no burden j upon the metabolism. One weighing 150 pounds could reduce re-duce weight by following such a diet and cutting off one item from each meal day by day until a slow decline in weight is noticed, then maintaining the diet at the point necessary to maintain the slow reduction yet not impair efficiency and well being. It is as nearly specific as we can make it for general use. It is impossible im-possible to lay down a more dinnite regime for the individual case without taking into consideration age, occupation, occupa-tion, general health and personal habits.
