CRISIS IS EXPECTED Officials Considering Whether Some Extraordinary Action May Be Taken. Washington, Aug. 3. "William L.. Chambers, commissioner of the federal fed-eral board of mediation and conciliation, concilia-tion, was called in by President "Wilson "Wil-son today in connection with the threatened strike of 400,000 employes of the railroads of the country. The president Is anxious to get all the information in-formation possible on tho situation necessary in order to intervene If a strike seems inevitable. The mediation board is gathering i facts in anticipation that the strike I vote now being canvassed will favor a walk-out and that the railroads and their employes will be unable to reach and ngreement. When this point is reached the board expects to be called In to attempt to settle the differences. differ-ences. Crisis Is Expected. The president has referred to the department of labor an appeal from the Chamber of Commerce of the United States for federal Intervention. The situation is expected to como to a crisis August S, when the result of the strlko vote will be announced and another conference held between the representatives of the railroad and of tlic employes. The mediation board takes the position posi-tion that nothing of a formal nature can be done by it until after tho result re-sult of the vote Is known and tho employers em-ployers and employes finally fail to agree. Tho president, however, is considering whether some extraordinary extraordin-ary action might be taken. |
