"William Belnap pleaded guilty this morning in the municipal court to a charge of operating a motorcycle at an unreasonable rate of speed on the Twenty-fourth street viaduct and was fined $5. The offense was committed commit-ted Monday morning, the defendant running down Calvin McGhie, who was on a bicycle. Both men were Injured In-jured and McGhie's bicycle was demolished. de-molished. Belnap said the accident was due to his view of the road nhead of him having been blocked by a wagon, which he skirted just before be-fore colliding with McGhie. The lat- ter held no malice and stated that the accident was unavoidable. J. W. Winn was found guilty of petit larceny and was sentenced to serve 30 days in the city jail or to pay a fine of $30. According to the evidence, he was associated with J. Peterson in the theft of a barrel of vinegar from the plant of the God-dard God-dard Pickling & Preserving company at Lincoln avenue and Twentieth street, on the night of July 21. Peterson, Peter-son, who Is being held on a charge of grand larceny, declared this morning that he had been. hired to get a barrel bar-rel of vinegar from the pickling plant and requested Winn to drive his HI 1. Johnson, Charles Kelly and James Kelly, drunks, we're each sentenced to pay a ?5 fine or to serve 5 days in jail. They were at first charged with robbery, it being alleged that they had picked the pocket of Lloyd Tre-soder, Tre-soder, a transient, but this charge was withdrawn. The women were arrested ar-rested Tuesday evening by Patrolman Patrol-man Fitzgerald. Henry Ikle and Ed. Larnard, who were booked on charges of drunkenness, drunken-ness, each forfeited $5 ball. W. J. Garvey and J, E. Ward, transient tran-sient of youthful appearance, were called to account for two alleged offenses of-fenses According to the testimony of Sergeant H. C. Peterson, Ward was taken Into custody on a charge of petit larceny and Gravey on a charge of attempted assault. Both resisted arrest, putting up a vicious fight. For this offense, they were sentenced to serve five days in jail. Ward pleaded guilty to petit larceny, haying hay-ing stolen two bar glasses and a salt shaker from the Pacific bar, and was given an extra five days to serve. Garvev entered a plea of not guilty to attempted assault and his trial was set for tomorrow morning. |
