Show uu liFJCTUBS OF UTAH 1ST GO 01 RECORD The following letter has been sent to the head of the Manufacturers' Association As-sociation of Utah by the Ogden Packing Pack-ing & Provision company: Mr. Geo. S. McAllister. President Manufacturers Association of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir: As members of the Utah Manufacturers association, we ask that you publicly make some expression, either of approval approv-al or disapproval, of the proposal of ihe Salt Lake business men to give to the Cudahy Packing Co. $'.10,000, In order to locate a packing pack-ing plant In Utah. The purpose of the association is to ouco.urage factories in Utah, but, at the same time, to protect those that are already here, and this is one of the purposes of us paying our fees to this association. associa-tion. There was a time when it was necessary to offer great inducements induce-ments to any industry starting. When the Union Pacific and the Cenlral Pacific brought their lines across the continent, they received large land grants from the government; when the creamery cream-ery business was started in Utah a bonus was given to them; when the sujiar business was started, they also received a bonus, but all of these grants and bonuses applied to Industries which had not been tried, and which were problematical as to their immediate and future success, and had to have some encouragement, but the packing business in Utah is not untried. It has been proven that it can be made successful. "Why then is it necessary to pay $90,000 to have some eastern concern con-cern come in here? It really appears ap-pears that It is for the purpose of putting the local concerns down and out. I heard from several sources while In Salt Lake, that Ogden had offered the Cudahy Packing company $200,000 to locate here. I can positively state that there has been no money offered of any kind whatsoever by Ogden to the Cudahy Packing company, and if the Cudahy Packing company told Salt Lake City that they were offered of-fered money to come to Ogden, it was done for the purpose of extracting ex-tracting money from Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake City apparently appar-ently fell for it Now we consider the Manufacturers Manufac-turers Association of Utah a Utah proposition. It Is to protect all of the various industries. It is outrageous that Salt Lane uny should help out an eastern concern con-cern to such an extent, entirely to the detriment of the local concerns, con-cerns, and it is just such things that foster the ill-feelings of all other Utah cities against Salt Lake continually. It would appear ap-pear that Salt Lake City could be more original, by going after industries in-dustries that are not here, than to have to cripple those that have already gotten started in Utah, even though it has been a very much ud hill proposition. We are forwarding an Ogden Standard, untler separate cover, which explains Ogden's view of the Salt Lake offer to the Cudahy Tacking company. We ask that you take such immediate im-mediate action as the association deems proper. |
