Show uu TWO MEET DEATH IN AN EXPLOSION Pittsburg, Sept 15. Two persons are known to have been killed and nearly a score of other persons injured in-jured by an explosion at the plant of the Aetna Chemical company near Oakdale, this county, today. A physician, physi-cian, who entered the enclosure surrounding sur-rounding the plant, asserted that he knew that at least five persons were dead. A body was identified as that of B. R. Dodds, night superintendent of the plant. Samuel Paul, an employee, em-ployee, died from injuries in a Pittsburg Pitts-burg hospital. Officials of the company com-pany refused to discuss the explosion, explo-sion, except to say that It originated In a small tank of ammonium nitrate, which Is used In the manufacture of dynamite. The detonation was felt for a radius of fifteen miles and many persons were Injured by tailing debris. Wilmington, Del., Sept. 15. Nineteen Nine-teen powder workers were burned, at least six of them seriously, by the explosion of several thousand pounds of smokeless powder at the plan of the Du Pont Powder company at Carney's Point, N. J., tonight. The flames oricnated.in a blending tower and, while the company has not established the cause, the opinion is advanced that piece of metal may have found its way into the powder which was being worked through the tower. Following the first big flare, which lighted up the country for miles around, there were several smaller ones, as trosh bins of powder In the tower became Ignited. The workmen were burned while fleeing from the building. The tower was destroyed in a few minutes. nn |
