Developments Develop-ments over the week-end, especially the sinking of the Sussex, involving probable further loss of American lives, accounted in a measure for the heavy tone of today's early trading. Declines of 1 to 2 points were registered regis-tered by Mercantile Marine preferred, leading motors, Crucible Steel, tho petroleums pe-troleums and some shares of less prominence. Rails receded fractionally fraction-ally with pressure against Harrlmans, Northern Pacific, Chesapeake and Ohio and Western Maryland. Dealings were light and orderly, most transactions being in small lots. Chicago Grain Chicago, March 27. Wheat hardened hard-ened in value today helped by contradiction contra-diction of reports that American lives had been lost by the torpedoing of the Sussex. At firBt, however, the market showed weakness as a result of lowejj quotations from Liverpool and because of further rains in the domestic winter crop belt. The bears had come advantage too far a time owing to predictions of lnrger receipts at country elevators during the next thirty days. Opening prices, which ranged from 1-8 to l-25-8c lower, with May at $1.07 3-4 to 1.08, and July at ?1.05 3-4 to 1.06, were followed fol-lowed by an upturn to well above Saturday's Sat-urday's finish. Corn rallied with wheat Stormy weather tended alBo to strengthen prices. After 1-4 to 3-8l-2c down, the market scored moderate gains. Oats were dominated by the action of other grain. Offorings were well absorbed because of standing orders to buy at a decline. Hlghor prices on hogs carried provisions provi-sions upgrade.
