Show jj FIRE IN CANYON NEAR SALT LAKE Salt Lake, Aug. 30. Panic reigned in Emigration canyon's colony of cottages cot-tages and campers yesterday morning, morn-ing, when It was feared for a time that every houso, tree and bush In the canyon was doomed to be wiped out by fire. Swift preparation was made for a general exodus from the threatened fire-trap, and frantic appeals ap-peals were sent to Salt Lake for help In fighting the blaze. Heroic action saved the dwellings, nowever, and the north side of the canyon's foliage from the ravages of the flames. There were many tired fire-fighters In the canyon last night, and there was still fire to be fought. The ash drab of fire-swept spaces has claimed the south side of the canyon. Autumn colors a few weeks hence will leave untouched the southward south-ward view from PInecrest as they will other expanses that have been flame- ' " J blasted in the past weeks of dry V weather. ji The firo. which started two days ago, swept north and west into the i canyon yesterday from the higher $ ridges to the east and south. Furnl-" turc from summer cottages was piled J along the railroad for the length of the canyon yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. Then the householders turn- ) ed and fought the fire back from "j: their summer dwellings. Sheriff John i S. Corless, with a half dozen deputies and as many prisoners from tho coun- i ty jail, saved tho day. Appeal for assistance was made to . the sheriff by A. Fred Wey, proprle- tor of PInecrest inn, who had watch- ed for two days the progress of the flames. While PInecrest is far re- (i moved from the fire zone, Mr. Wey ; could see that unless the flames were f stayed the summer cottages in the bottom of the canyon would be de- i stroyed. He drove to this city in an jy automobile after first telephoning down an alarm and an appeal for vol- unteers. Sheriff Corless responded at once i when Mr. Wey stated the situation to him The result was that darkness f, settled down last night without a sin- X glo cottage having been touched by ! the fire, and with a fighting chance for their continued safety, barring ad- verso winds. 4 |
