Show 'MEN MILK COWS ID THUS HELP TO DRIVE AWAY HUNGER The employed having headquarters in the Maule block on Twenty-fifth street, were given the privilege of milkinp cows at the stockyardB today to procure milk for the rabbit dinner this afternoon. "While many of the men have had no experience in milking, milk-ing, it is said thar they succeeded fairly well in stripping the rattle and they returned to headquarters with about fifteen gallons. The cooks attended to the preparation prepara-tion of seventy jackrabbits from the Promontory hunt, which with other foodstuffs, furnished a meal. An improvised im-provised table, mado of ladder, covered cov-ered with card board, was arranged and a number of tin plates and cups wpre furnished. A few knives and forks were on hand for use at the meal. A range was given the men by City Commissioner Chris Flygare. and san- j itary improvements were made yesterday yes-terday afternoon, leaving the men fairly comfortable. There were about sixty men at the quarters last night, most of them remaining during the day. It is estimated that fully 125 pai took of the rabbit stew this afternoon, after-noon, A number of people have contributed contribut-ed to the welfare of the men. Ed Wilson, a brakeman, gave $1.50; Al-vord Al-vord & Son, a heater; Geo. A. Lowe, four dozen tincups; R. L. Crosby, a bucket; Utah Light & Traction io one doren light globes; Mrs. A. E. Shaw, 421 Sixteenth street, two cots, with bedsprlngs and blanket and one-half dozen chairs. Many have sent in castoff garments, which ait, being handed to the deBtttute men, and the leaders of the organization desire more clothing, for which they offer to work. The men say they do not want charity, but prefer to labor for whatever what-ever is given them and they hav adopted the watchword among rnem-selves, rnem-selves, "We will try to help every one who will try to help himself." G. S. Gilchrist, a local electrician, has been made president of this unemployed un-employed body, known as the International Inter-national Welfare association, Beit Schramser is on the house committee, and Mrs. T. M. Montgomery' Is treasurer. treas-urer. The unemployed are to give an en tertalnment of song and recitation, from the talent among the men, at 8 p. m next Monday, to which the public pub-lic is Invited The "house warming' is intended to make the people generally gen-erally better acquainted with the purposes pur-poses of the organization. oo |
