Show PLOT TO RELEASE BREWER FROM PEN Salt Lake, Aug. 11. A plot to deliver de-liver Harry Brewer, convicted murderer, mur-derer, from tho state prison, was brought to light yesterday, and throughout last night Warden Arthur Pratt, with several guards, maintained maintain-ed a fruitless vigil awaiting the ap-pearanco ap-pearanco of the two "outside" men who are believed to have come to Salt Prison guards discovered yesterday forenoon that steel saws had been smuggled secretly to Brewer In his coll. He had sawed a large hole through the solid steel wall of his cell, this giving him access to the corridor. This discovery, coupled with Information Infor-mation secretly given to the prison officials by other inmates of the prison, pris-on, disclosed the; plot. It was learned that Brewer had summoned two former for-mer accomplices to aid him. Tho men first came to Salt Lake about a month ago, but their plans falling then they left, returning about a week ago. Less than a month ago, prison officials offi-cials removed Brewer from the second-grade cellhouse to the first-grade cells, where murderers and other desperate des-perate criminals are kept In solitary confinement. This action was taken when It was hinted that Brewer was planning his delivery. At the time of his removal Brewer was carefully searched for tools and weapons, but none was found. Likewise, Like-wise, the new cell was carefully examined. ex-amined. Plans Guarded. How tho saws which Brewer used in sawing away the wall of his cell came into his possession and how he managed to complete so much of the work before It was discovered is a mystery which will perhaps remain such. Yesterday's events disclosed the third plot made by Brewer to escape the gallows for the death of Eugene Allen in Bingham during an attempt to rob the Highland Boy store of the Miners' Mercantile company on the night of April 15, 1914. While confined in the count jail awaiting trial for the murder, Brewer succeeded in smuggling letters to accomplices ac-complices in Montana. He told them to come to his aid He outlined in the letters that It would be an easy matter mat-ter to effect his delivery from tho county jail, as thero were but two men on duty there at night time One of these letters was intercepted intercept-ed by Jailer Qeorgo Cleveland and the plot was disclosed. Brewer and Frank DePretto, his alleged accomplice, were hurriedly removed to the state prison for safe keeping. Brewer's plan for his escape, as disclosed to the prison authorities yesterday, is an elaborate one. So carefully had every detail been planned plan-ned that, but for the chance discovery of the hole in the steel wall, his escape es-cape might have been effec ed. por-haps por-haps at the cost of life to one or more of the guards. The exact time set for Brewer to attempt at-tempt his escape has not been ascertained. ascer-tained. He planned to stealthily make his way through the hole in his cell into the main corridor. At no moment from the time he left tho cell through the holo until the time ho was safely over tho prison wall would his life be safe. Likewise, as ho had planned to arm himself with tho gun taken from tho guard on tho interior of the cell-house, cell-house, the life of every guard on duty at tho prison would be in danger. The exact part which tho two accomplices ac-complices of Brewer were to play In tho escape cannot bo definitely ascertained, ascer-tained, but it was admitted by officials offi-cials that a high degree of understanding under-standing had boon worked up between be-tween them and Browor. By what means the officers are at a loss to determine. de-termine. Brewer has been kept under tho strictest vigilance possible. Ho was known to be a desperate man, and from this fact alone he has been given giv-en little or no opportunity to communicate com-municate with persons outside the prison. Brewer is known to police officials throughout xhe Intermountain west as ono of the most daring safo cracksmen cracks-men operating within the last ten years. As such he Is known to have been the leader of a gang of daring bandits who havo operated in Oregon, Ore-gon, Washington and Idaho. |
