Show CHILDREN DIE '' ' OF STARVATION Mexico City, July 31, via Vera Cruz, Aug. 8, via Laredo, Tex. Aug. 10. Delayed in Transmission.- Eight deaths by starvation, all children were reported by the. police station of the Second ward today. The general gen-eral hospital also reported deaths by starvation though the number -was notmade public. A police court record in the second ward was brought to tho attention of the American Red Cross representatives representa-tives as illustrative of the extreme misery prevailing among the lower classes, because of the want of food A woman -was brought into court charged with stealing a dog The defendant's plea was that the animal - was stolen for the purpose of feeding it to her children. The judge dismissed dis-missed the woman. Despite the distressing conditions the Red Cross representatives and the foreign relief societies have been able to do very little because of the military authorities refuse to tallow food to enter the city Red Cross officials now have a supply sup-ply of beef and beans sufficient) for 750,000 liters of soup. Already applications appli-cations have come from 60,000 persons per-sons and the present supply will last no longer than a fortnight. Cases of death from starvation are being daily reported to the Red Cross headquarters. oo |
